2 YOUR GOVERNMENT  The Constitution is the supreme law of the land starting with “We the people…”  The first 10 amendments are known as the Bill of Rights

3 YOUR GOVERNMENT  The First Amendment allows you the freedoms of:  There are currently 27 amendments to the Constitution

4 YOUR GOVERNMENT  The three branches of government are the legislative, executive, and judicial branches

5 YOUR GOVERNMENT  The legislative branch makes federal laws  It consists of the Senate and the House of Representatives

6 YOUR GOVERNMENT  There are currently 100 senators (2 per state) with 6 year terms  There are currently 435 representatives with 2 year terms

7 YOUR GOVERNMENT  The executive branch is the President of the United States who is elected for 4 year terms in November  The president is the commander in chief of the military and signs bills to become laws

8 YOUR GOVERNMENT  If the president can not serve, the vice president assumes the job  If both are unable to serve, the speaker of the house assumes the job

9 YOUR GOVERNMENT  The judicial branch is run by the supreme court and its 9 justices who are elected for life

10 YOUR GOVERNMENT  The governor of NJ is Chris Christie and the state capital is Trenton  The 2 major parties are the Democratic and the Republican

11 YOUR GOVERNMENT  You have to be 18 or older to vote  The Declaration of Independence was adopted in 1776 and the Constitution in 1787

12 YOUR GOVERNMENT  The first president was George Washington  The capital of the United States is Washington DC  The Statue of Liberty is on Ellis Island

13 YOUR GOVERNMENT  13 stripes = 13 colonies  50 stars = 50 states  National Anthem = The Star Spangled Banner
