Single-celled Organisms – The Big Ideas Some living things are made of a single cell. Single-celled organisms have the same basic needs as all living things. Many single-celled organisms, including bacteria, are helpful. Some single-celled organisms have unique features that enable them to move by themselves.

Single-celled Organisms – Prior Knowledge Students will have knowledge of plants prior to this study. It will help for students to use the Fun- damental, Seeing Cells. It will also help if they have:Seeing Cells – Seen a variety of living things. – Learned that all living things are made up of cells.

Single-celled Organisms – Common Misconceptions All bacteria are harmful. –Reality: Most bacteria, about 70%, are harmless, and some are helpful. For example, bacteria in the stomach and intestines help to digest food.

Single-celled Organisms – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Single-celled Organisms. Reading Passage: Bacteria and Your BodyBacteria and Your Body eBooks: What’s in Pond Water? What’s in Pond Water? Video Segment: One-celled Animals: Kingdom of ProtistsOne-celled Animals: Kingdom of Protists Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Single-celled Organisms – Instructional Ideas Place students in groups of two. –Have groups to read the passages, Bacteria and Your Body and Living Things You Can Not See.Bacteria and Your Body Living Things You Can Not See –Ask groups to create a Venn Diagram using the information from both passages. –Discuss the Venn Diagrams as a class.

Single-celled Organisms – Instructional Ideas Watch the video segment, Organisms Found in Pond Water: Protozoa.Organisms Found in Pond Water: Protozoa –Give each pair of students a microscope. Place one drop of water from a local pond on a slide. –Ask students to observe the pond water under the microscope and make a drawing of what they see. –Share the drawings as a class and discuss what was seen.
