9 In your own words, tell me what YOU THINK a goal is?
What is a goal? In your own words, tell me what YOU THINK a goal is?

10 A goal is…. (Noun) the result or achievement toward which effort is directed; has aim; and a clear end.

11 Three different types of goals
The best way to get where you want to go is with a mix of short, medium, and long-term goals.

12 What is the difference between short, medium, and long-term goals…and what are the steps?

13 Begin with your long-term goals
Set your long-term goals first. What do you want to achieve in the next few years? These are broad goals that will take some time to achieve, like buying a home, graduating from college, or starting your own business. Your long-term goals are the foundation for goal setting as they define where you want to be in the future. Long-term goals should be obtainable within a set number of years. Try to give your goals a time frame, such as buying a home in five years or graduating from college with a PhD degree in eight.

14 Next, create your medium goals
Set your medium term goals next. Let these act as large stepping-stones to help you achieve your goals. For example, if your goal is to be a doctor, let a medium-term goal be to graduate from a four-year college and a create a plan to attend med-school. this needs to be a reasonable goal between where you stand now and the ultimate goal you hope to achieve. Medium term goals should also have specific time frames in mind. These will keep you moving forward, ensuring that you're always working toward your long-term goals and aspirations.

15 Finally, focus on your short-term goals
Set short-term goals. These are goals that you can achieve more easily and in a short period of time. Your short-term goals do not always have to be connected to your middle and/or your long-term goals. Some examples of some short-term goals could be: Getting all a’s this semester Take a trip this summer Join a sport of club at school

16 What are the steps for reaching any goal?
• It has to be important to you, personally. • It has to be within your power to make it happen through your own actions. • It has to be something you have a reasonable chance of achieving. • It must be clearly defined and have a specific plan of action.

17

18 What are the steps for reaching the Honda cog goal?
• Why was it important to them personally? Did the team feel they had enough expertise to complete their goal? • Before they started, did they think it was something that could actually be achieved? How do you know? • Did they have a clearly defined and have a specific plan of action? What were some of the steps they stuck to in order to be successful?

19 Four Step Goal Setting Process
1.  Define the goal.* 2.  Outline the steps needed to achieve it. 3.  Consider possible blocks and ways of dealing with them. 4.  Set deadlines.

20 Practice Pick one pretend case and go through the four step goal-setting process on the lines next to this slide. Goal #1: Help a new kid in school feel included. Goal #2: Get a good summer job. Goal #3: Stop violence on the school grounds. Goal #4: Earn enough money to buy a new bicycle. Goal #5: Raise money to buy a new computer for the school library.

21 Now, it’s your turn… You will complete three of these goal ladders: one for a short-term goal, one for a middle-term goal, and one for a long-term goal. List the goal at the bottom right corner of the picture, and then use the four steps to complete the ladder to reach the goal.

23 Assignment: The Perseverance Walk
Choose to interview someone over the age of 21 who has set a challenging goal, experienced some challenges, but persevered and accomplished their goal. During the Interview, you need to think about three things: What goal were they trying to achieve? What are some things that got in the way (challenges)? How did they accomplish their goal, and how is their life better because of it? Create a collage about the person you interviewed. The collage must include: The name and relation of the person you interviewed A short background about that person’s life An answer to the above three questions

24 What is a mission statement?
Mission statements are the words leaders use to explain an organization's purpose and direction. When expressed clearly and remains short and sweet, they can motivate each team, or the organization as a whole, with an inspiring vision of the future.

25 What about Rocky’s Mission? Mission:
A learning environment dedicated to high expectations and success for all students. Critique our own Mission Statement and write something you like about it and something you dislike about it.

26 Personal mission statement
A good way to define who you are and where you’re headed is to create a personal mission statement. A mission statement keeps you focused and prevents you from drifting off course. It also serves as a launching point and a solid foundation made of self-awareness and a greater sense of purpose.

27 HOW TO WRITE YOUR PERSONAL MISSION STATEMENT
Start by answering these questions: Describe how you see yourself in a positive way? What do you stand for? And why do you do it? Is your goal to excel in high school and get into a good college, or are you satisfied just graduating high school? How do you want to be seen as?

28 Example of a mission statement:
I will contribute to my family by offering support. I want to contribute to society through a charity organization. I will raise my children to embrace other cultures and not fear differences in people. I believe in treating others with kindness. I do not make excuses for myself. I will be humble and serve others.

29 Example of a mission statement:
I will look for strengths in others, and the good in every situation. I will ensure that I do what I can to create a learning environment everywhere I go. I will live with an attitude of gratitude. I will repay every kindness shown to me. I will live, work, and play with renewed spirit.
