1 Your hobbies, interests, and habits often depend on the climate you are used to and the people and places you encounter every day. If you were to move away from everything you know, how much of who you are would change? How much would stay the same? JOURNAL ENTRY IT’S A MARVELOUS MONDAY! JOURNAL ENTRY CAN WHERE YOU ARE CHANGE WHO YOU ARE? WHY OR WHY NOT?

2  In “Dark They Were, and Golden-Eyed” by Ray Bradbury, we will be looking closely at the mood the author creates.  You will also see that Bradbury’s diction affects the mood of the story  Words to consider  Words to consider :  Convivial  Dwindle  Flimsy  Forlorn  Muse  Pendulum  Recede  Subtly VOCABULARY IN CONTEXT Can you match each of these with a word I’ve asked you to consider? 1.Friendly 2.Indirectly 3.Hanging weight 4.Decrease 5.Become distant 6.Daydream 7.Lonely 8.breakable

3 Key Ideas: What is mood? What stories have I read that have made me feel hopeful, nervous, or completely terrified? Notes: -Mood is the feeling you get from a story. Writers create mood by - Writers create mood by : (1) carefully choosing words to describe the plot, setting and characters AND (2) Showing what characters think and how they talk E.Q. HOW DO WE IDENTIFY THE MOOD OF A STORY?

4  What is science fiction?  What are characteristics of sci-fi?  A genre in which writers explore the future  The author blends scientific facts and theories with familiar elements of real life with their own ideas.  Portrays future times and places  Themes often comment on the problems of today’s world WHAT DO YOU REMEMBER ABOUT SCIENCE FICTION?
