7 Turkish Education System Turkish National Education System is based on two main branches: Formal Education & Life Long Learning Education. Formal Education Formal education is the regular education conducted within a school for individuals in a certain age group and at the same level, under programs developed in accordance with the purpose. It covers: Pre-school Education (3-5) Primary Education (6-9) Junior Secondary Education(10-13) Secondary Education (14-17) Higher Education (18+)

10 Pre-school Education Pre-school Education is not compulsory and it covers the group of children aged between 36 - 72 months (3-5 years). The ministry of education is trying to increase the number of children participating in this education system by parents training programs, mobile kindergardens, and summer school alternatives.

11 Primary and Junior High School Education Primary and junior high school education covers the group of children aged between 6 –13 years old. It’s compulsory for all girls and boys, and it is free of charge at public schools. The primary and junior high school education covers a period of 8 years (4 primary and 4 junior high school).

12 Primary and Junior High School Education (Continued) The objective of primary education is to ensure that every Turkish child acquires the necessary knowledge, skills, behavior and habits to become a good citizen and is raised in accordance with the concept of national morals and that he/she is prepared for life and for the next level of education in accordance with his/her interests, talents and capabilities.

13 Primary and Junior High School Education (Continued) Primary education institutions consist of four year primary and four year compulsory junior high schools which give opportunity to allow between different programmes, and junior theology high schools for imams and preachers. The preferable lessons in type of supporting students’ upper secondary education consist of by students’ ability, improvement and prefers in junior high schools and junior high schools for imams and preachers.

14 High School Education High education is a system based on the primary and junior secondary education, which covers 4 year period. It is for 14-17 years old students.It includes general, vocational and technical high schools.

15 Types of General Secondary Education Anatolian General High Schools Science High Schools Anatolian Teacher Training High Schools Anatolian Fine Arts High Schools Anatolian Social Sciences High Schools Anatolian Sports High Schools The entrance to the secondary education institutions is through a centralized exam.

16 Vocational and Technical Secondary Education Vocational and technical secondary schools are institutions that train students for the industrial and service sectors in our country.

17 Non-Formal Education (Life Long Learning) In accordance with the general objectives and basic principles of national education, the objectives of non-formal education, which covers citizens who have never entered the formal education system or are at any level of it or have left at that level, and which may accompany formal education or be independent of it are; To teach citizens to read and write and to provide them with the possibility of continuous education so that they may complete their deficient education, To provide them with the opportunity of education that shall help them in adjusting to scientific, technological, economic, social and cultural developments, To provide an education that serves to protect, develop, promote and assimilate the values of our national culture,

19 Aims of National Education The Turkish National Educational System aims: learning how to learn active learning student centered learning life-long learning to create a society equipped with knowledge, democratic, cultural and economic awareness integrity among all educational institutions.

20 Higher Education Higher education includes all the educational institutions which are based on secondary education, and which provide at least two years of higher education. In Turkey there are 108 state and 71 private universities (total 179) and 4975690(2256862 in open education F 1041783 M 1215069) students 2706937 of whom are male and 2268753 are female in 2012-2013 academic year.
