Rainforest Biome Ms. Graham’s 6 th Grade Science

Rainforest Temperature  20 to 25 degree Celsius  Must remain warm and frost-free Precipitation  2,000 to 10,000 ml of rain per year Vegetation  Vines, palm trees, orchids, ferns

Rainforest Location  Found between the Tropic of Cancer and the Tropic of Capricorn Two Types  Tropical  Temperate

Rainforest Tropical Found closer to the equator Warm and wet 250 cm to 450 cm precipitation/yr. 8 to 14 feet!! Average temperature is above 20 degree C Never a frost Temperate Found farther north near costal areas 200 cm to 350 cm precipitation/year as rain or snow at higher elevations Average annual temp is above 0 degree C Warmest of the temperate areas AAT is around 20 degree C

Rainforest Tropical Some of the warmest and wettest areas on earth due to the proximity to the equator, 23.5 degree N to 23.5 degree S latitudes Temperate A small biome Main stretch lies along NW coast of N. America from N. California through S. Alaska. Small areal in S. Chile, New Zeland, and Australia They form where relatively warm offshore waters affect inland climates

Rainforest Tropical Plant Species Chocolate tree Diversity in the tropical rainforest is the key Many areas have from 30 to over 300 different species of trees!! The La Selva site in Costa Rica has over 1,600 species of plants Temperate Plant Species Dominated by big coniferous trees – Doguglas fir, Western Red Cedar, Mountain Hemlock, Western Hemlock Some deciduous trees – Big-Leaf Maple Mosses and lichens

Rainforest Tropical Animal Species Great Apes and Monkeys – Gorilla, Orangutan, Spider Monkey, sloths Toucans, Collared Aracari Temperate Animal Species Slugs Clark’s Nutcracker Blue Grouse

Rainforest Threats The biggest threat to the Rainforest is the development of civilization. Progress is constantly expanding and slowly encroaching on Rainforest lands Timber industry is also a vital industry and has hurt the rainforest.
