2 The Protestant Reformation- Background information In 1517 a monk named Martin Luther started to criticize the power of the pope and the catholic church. The rediscovery of the learning of ancient world, Printing press The bible was transfer into vernacular language so more people can read it and more people began to learn how to read. The church began to split up power and the people of the era became more powerful During the protestant reformation new religions came into play such as Judaism, Protestant, and more. People began breaking away from the roman catholic church

3 Martin Luther Martin was born on November tenth 1483, and died February eighteenth 1546 Martin Luther’s teachings inspired the protestant reformation His transformation of the bible helped make the bible be widely spread through out Germany Martin Luther was troubled by his religion thru out the years, there for he cam up with the 95 theses Luther’s ideas also spread thru out Europe He created the Lutheran church

4 95 Theses Where created by Martin Luther in 1517 When Luther wrote the 95 Theses it had a huge impact on the religious world One of the impacts was people began to question the stance of the Roman Catholic Church Were translated into German More people were able to access it this way

5 Printing the Bible Gutenberg perfected the printing press He used it to print the bible It was also known as the Gutenberg Bible Gutenberg used Gothic type font, to make it look hand written He did this because he thought that he would get in trouble if it wasn’t hand written

6 John Calvin Calvin was born in 1509 He went to the university of Paris And studied Theology when he was 14 there In 1540 Calvin attended a conference for the church He also attended conferences Calvin wrote a book called Institutes of the Christian religion

7 Church of England Started in the renaissance in the Roman Province of England Started in third century AD ‘ The British church was missionary With figures such as St Ninian, and saint Patrick The western church became divided into various protestant churches

8 Counter Reformation The society of Jesus Was the most important reactionary movements Is referred to as the Catholic reformation Is the original purpose of the Jesuits was to reach and convert group of people who left the church In 16 th century the church undertook to reform it self Many distinguishing men saw the needs of the church and tired to help easy

9 Council of Trent The council of Trent was from 1545-1564 the Council discussed matters on relationship Is referred to as the Catholic reformation Protestants were invited to send representatives After the second session the council took ten years off ten years off because of the war in Germany
