Classroom Management Elementary Getting off to a good start!! 2013-2014

Introduction Who is in the room?

Objectives Teachers Will: Generate idea on how to set up the classroom environment conducive to learning. Explore ways to build community in the classroom. Compare and contrast Discipline plans.

Classroom Management: Is a very broad and inclusive term that refers to the full range of things teachers do to organize, people, material, space, and time for the purpose of teaching and learning. Classroom discipline, relationship building, community building, engagement strategies are included within the general term of classroom management. -Setting Limits in the Classroom

Classroom Design Brainstorming Discuss with 2-3 other people what might be your priorities in designing the physical space of your classroom Take 3-5 minutes to have everyone share out some ideas… Everybody speaks once before anyone speaks twice…

Classroom Arrangement Use flexible arrangements to match instructional objectives and desired student interaction. Set up desks or tables in ways that will work well for small group and large instruction. Reduce barriers and distance between you and your students. Check visibility from each seat. Place your desk against a wall.

Classroom Arrangement Continued.. Think safety when setting up bookcases, cabinets, files, and electrical items. The Supply Area needs to be accessible and organized. Make sure high traffic areas are as clear of furniture as possible.

Walls and White Boards The Daily schedule and Objectives need to be posted in the same spot daily. Place anchor charts and other learning resources low enough so that the students can utilize them. Student work and exemplars help raise student achievement according to research. Frame and hang copies of your diplomas on the wall near your desk.

Community Building Research shows that if you take time to build a relationship with your students and take the time to have them build a relationship with each other there will be less behavioral issues. Ideas: (Consider doing a Google search for Icebreakers) Meet the students at the door and welcome each one individually. Play “get to know you” activities such as: More About Me Class Bingo Interview Me

Routines Taking time to learn routines at the beginning of the year will help your whole year go more smoothly. Make sure to practice, practice, practice. Morning routine Lining up for specials Routines during Literacy and Math Lunch routine End of the day routine. **Make sure to include routines in your substitute folder

Beyond the need to survive we have four basic needs… to belong and love, to gain power, to be free, and to have fun. Glasser, william: Control Theory in the Classroom

Rules It is crucial that you have high expectation for the students from the first day of school. You need to model and discuss, and expected behavior. -Develop classroom rules with the students -Use approximately 4-5 rules -Make them short and easy to remember -State them positively -Get a commitment to the rules (show of hands, vote, contract, bulletin board display) -Teach each rule (share expectations)

Teach classroom rules Involve the students in the development of the rules. Discuss and internalize their value Discuss expectations Teach rules Model rules Review rules Reinforce rules Monitor whether or which rules have been learned. Re-teach if necessary. Enforce rules.

Problem Resolution Show students how to use I-statements I feel I need Next time

Strategies and techniques Gaining Students’ Attention Stay in one area when you’re giving directions When students are noisy, instead of raising your voice to get their attention wait for a lull and speak quietly. Use a chime to gain student attention. Have a saying such as, one, two, three eyes on me. When lining up you can have a mystery person.

Strategies Continued 100% Compliance Breaking the Plane Positive Framing Pair Share- What ideas have you used or seen that are effective in gaining and holding student attention.

Engage Parents Creating a partner relationship with parents will help benefit all during the year. Ideas: Parent interview- How does your child learn. Rules: Send the rules home and ask parents to discuss them with their child. Call often to celebrate behavior and growth.

Engage Parents Send home information often in the form of notes, class letters, and Friday Folders. (Follow school procedure) Involve parent volunteers in the classroom with tasks that take time and are not directly related to instruction. If there is an issue address it immediately.
