3. Lesson Objectives 1.Research sports and games that are still played in the UK 2. Understand characteristics of surviving ethnic sports and reasons for their survival.

4. The United Kingdom Sports and games reflect the culture in which they exist People may play games that suit them and their environment. Sport and psychical activity reflect community's true nature and personality. The British Isles are rich in traditional festivals and customs They are often bound up with the changing seasons and the rhythm of country life. Many are of medieval or pagan origin. They can be both single sport occasions such as the Haxey Hood Game or multi-sport festivals such as the Highland Games.

5. Robert Dover’s Cotswold Olympics This is a multi-sport occasion, established in 1605. It was an annual event until 1851 when it was disrupted by hooligans. It was revived in Gloucestershire in 1963 and still continues today. The original activities of throwing the sledgehammer, sword fighting, shin-kicking, dancing, fireworks and picnics. Today they have wrestling, Morris dancers, cross-country running, hot air ballooning and fireworks.
