Symbols of Britain You’re going to watch a short film. It was made for the Olympic Games in 2014. It shows symbols of Britain. Before you watch, think of some symbols of a) the countries that are in Britain, or the United Kingdom b) your country.
Symbols of Britain 1 The beautiful British countryside
Symbols of Britain 2 A poppy: a symbol of the war and of remembrance 3 A thatched cottage: symbol of the British Countryside 4 A British pub garden. Icon of the British summer (if it ever happens!)
Symbols of Britain 5 Wind in the Willows: a very famous children’s book 6 rowing, 7 cricket and 8 show jumping: All very British sports (we’re good at ‘sitting down’ sports like rowing, riding and cycling!)
Symbols of London 11 Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament & 12 Tower Bridge
Symbol of Britain’s future? The Thames Barrier. If global warming causes the Thames to flood, the barrier will prevent London from flooding.
British stereotypes True or false? Everyone in Britain talks like the Queen. Generally speaking, I think this is true. I think people tend to have different accents depending on where they live.
British stereotypes True or false? It rains every day in the UK. On the whole, Britain is much wetter than other countries in Europe. I think it probably does rain every day. It’s not normal for it to rain every day in Britain, especially not in the summer.
