2. What are columns? Definitions:  a tall, cylindrical, vertical upright used to support a structure  a vertical structure standing alone and not supporting anything (as a monument or a column of air) Three main parts of a column:  Base (bottom, supportive part)  Shaft (middle)  Capital (top, decorative part) Three main types:  Doric (simple, geometric capital)  Ionic (ram’s horns capital)  Corinthian (leafy capital)

3. Where have you seen columns around town? The ING building in downtown Minneapolis has tall, thin columns!

4. This building has columns! Do you know which building this is? (It’s in Minneapolis!)

5. The dome (top part) of the Capitol Building in Saint Paul has columns!

6. Sometimes columns don’t support a building. Sometimes they are free-standing monuments.  Place Vendôme Column in Paris. Emperor Napoleon is at the top and is dressed as a victorious Roman emperor!  Bronze story plates taken from war canons

7. Another free-standing monument column…  Trajan’s Column in the Forum in Rome, Italy  Celebrates Emperor Trajan’s victory in war  115 feet tall with its huge pedestal base  Made of marble, storytelling frieze on the outside  Staircase inside

8. Another free-standing monument column…  London, England: Monument to the Great Fire of London that blazed in 1666  202 feet tall  Has a viewing platform  Made by Sir Christopher Wren, 1667
