1 World War 1 By. Sean Sorensen, Elizabeth Salas, and Kendra Dartey

2 Main Points World War 1 began in Europe in 1914 Germany and Austria-Hungary went to war with Britain, France, and the Russian Empire America remained neutral for 3 years, and entered the war because of the German submarine warfare Americans wanted to “make the world safe for democracy”

3 What started The War After large diplomatic troubles in the Balkans the Germans marched on Belgium The official start of the war was August, 1914 On Tuesday August 4th Britain gave Germany an ultimatum to remove their military operations against Belgium by midnight.

4 What countries were involved The alliances of Britain, France, and the United States (to a small degree Italy) The alliances of Germany, Austria-Hungary, and the Ottoman Empire

5 How the United States got involved The sinking of the lusitania The zimmerman telegram A message sent to mexico to encourage them to invade the us with german support

6 The Sinking of the Lusitania On Friday, May 7th 1915, The Lusitania sank due to German submarine warfare. The Lusitania was a British ship Known as “The greyhound of the seas” Was the world’s largest passenger ship in the early 1900’s

7 Zimmerman Telegram On January 1917, the Zimmerman Telegram proposed German-Mexican alliance against the U.S.

8 Wilson’s Fourteen Point Plan On January 8, 1918, President Woodrow Wilson proposed The Fourteen Points program for world peace to Congress. Key Points: 1. Self-Determination 2. Freedom of the seas 3. League of Nations 4. Mandate system

9 1. Open covenants of peace 2. Absolute freedom of navigation upon the seas 3. Removal of all economic barriers 4. Reduction of national armaments 5. Adjustment of colonial claims 6. Evacuation of all Russian territory 7. Evacuation and restoration of Belgium Wilson’s Fourteen Points

14 Christmas Truce Unofficial truce was called on December 25, 1914 The Germans unarmed crossed no-man's land to wish the allies a Merry Christmas They gave presents of cigarettes and plum pudding they even had soccer matches

16 United States involvement in The War The United States officially declared war on April 6, 1917 They wanted to stay out of the war but unrestricted submarine warfare drew them in The first battle the states fought in was The Battle of Cantigny in 1918

17 Treaty of Versailles On June 28,1919 the Treaty of Versailles was signed The terms were harsh for Germany which lost territory, all its colonies, airforce, most of its Navy, and an army permanently reduced to 100,000 men The League of Nations was created France and England insisted on punishing the Germans

18 End of War It ended at the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month possibly the 11th second The war ended on November 11, 1918 It lasted for 4 years It was known as the “war to end all wars”

19 World War 1 Fun Facts 1.Tanks had genders males had cannons while the females had machine guns. The prototype tank was named “Little Willie” 2.Archduke Franz Ferdinand's licence plate when he was assassinated was “A 111 118” which could be interpreted as “Armistice 11 November ‘18” 3.The terrorist group that killed Franz Ferdinand was named “Black Hand, Sarajevo” 4.WWI was the 6th deadliest conflict in world history 5.During WWI surgeon Harold Gillies used the first forms of plastic surgery to help soldiers in need of facial reconstruction some even had eyelashes made from curved prices of metal
