ICT in Maple Leaf School (DMLFNS), Grades 7-9 By HeeSeung Sam Aiden

Hardware, Software, Information Technology What is Hardware? Your PC (Personal Computer) is a system, consisting of many components. Some of those components, like Windows XP, and all your other programs, are software. The stuff you can actually see and touch, and would likely break if you threw it out a fifth-story window, is hardware.

What is Software? Software is the general term for information that's recorded onto some kind of medium. For example, when you go to the video store and rent or buy a tape or DVD, what you're really getting is the software that's stored on that tape or disk. Your VCR or DVD player are hardware devices that are capable of reading the software from a tape or disk and projecting it onto your TV screen, in the form of a movie.

WHAT IS IT(INFORMATION TECHNORLOGY)? Information technology (IT), as defined by the Information Technology AssociationInformation Technology Association of America of America (ITAA), is "the study, design, development, implementation, support or management of computer-based information systems, particularly software applications and computer hardware."[1] IT deals with the use of electronic computers and computer software to convert, store, protect, process, transmit, and securely retrieve information.information systems[1] computerscomputer softwareconvertstoreprotectprocesstransmit securelyinformation

Types Of Computers Personal computer: A small, single-user computer based on microprocessor.

Workstation: A powerful, single-user computer. A workstation is like a personal computer, but it has a more powerful microprocessor and, in general, a higher -quality monitor. Mainframe: A powerful multi-user computer capable of supporting many hundreds or thousands of users simultaneously.

Minicomputer: A multi-user computer capable of supporting up to hundreds of users simultaneously

Supercomputer: An extremely fast computer that can perform hundreds of millions of instructions per second.

Main Parts of a Personal Computer

CD-ROM These are the silvery plastic disks that look just like music CD's. Application software (programs) usually come written on these, and special kinds of CD-ROM's can be used to store large amounts of data. Floppy Disk This is a somewhat floppy coated disk housed inside a not-floppy plastic case about the size of a square beverage coaster. Once the files have been written, the floppy can be removed for use on another computer or for safe keeping a s a backup or data archive. Keyboard This is organized like a regular typewriter keyboard and has some extra keys for special functions. Attaches to the system unit with a cord. Monitor (or display) The part of the computer that looks like a small TV and shows you what is going on. Usually has 2 cords: one for power and the other for connecting to the system unit.

Windows Window is like a combination translator, conductor and helper. Windows is software that allows the various parts of the computer to work together. Hard disk (or Hard Drive) This is like the computer's file cabinet. In nearly all cases, it is permanently installed in the system unit and stores both the software the computer uses and the data files the user creates.
