2 Adam and Jefferson Talk Many years after 1776 John Adams recalled a conversation with Thomas Jefferson about the writing of the document. Thomas Jefferson :You should do it Adams: Oh! No. Jefferson: Why will you not? You aght to do it….

3 Adams: You can write ten times better than I can. Jefferson: Well, if you are decided, I will do as well as I can.

4 Colonial Leaders Emerge On May 10, 1775, Second Continental Congress assembled for the first time, declaring independence but the conversation between Adams and Jefferson did not occur until more than a year after that first meeting.

5 The colonies take the offensive The congress learned that British troops stationed in what is now Canada and were planning to invade New York. The American forces stayed outside the city of Quebec through the long winter and returned to fort to Ticonderoga in 1776.

6 Washington judged the continental army ready to fight. He positioned the army in a cyma circle around Boston and gave the order for its cannons to Bromberg the British forces. On march 17 Washington lead his jubilant troops into Boston.

7 Moving toward independence Throughout the colonies in late 1775 an early 1776 some Americans hoped to avoid a complete a break with Britain. In January 1976 Thomas Paine published a pamphlet called common since that captured the attention of the American colonists.

8 The colonies declare independence At the second continental congress in phalli. The meeting hall was filled with spirited debate. The congress debated the resolution. While the elegance debated the issue the congress chose a comity to draft a declaration of independence.

9 Declaration Of Independence Has four major sections The Preamble, Introduction, States that people who wish to form a new country should explain the reasons for doing so. The next two sections list the rights the colonist believe they should have and there complaints against a Britain. The final section proclaims the existance of the new nation.
