1. MARTIN LUTHER KING AND MALCOLM X Two men with the same goal, but a different approach.

2.  African Americans should take control of their economic and social lives.  Symbol was the Raised Fist.  “Black is beautiful” becomes the mantra during the Black Power rallies.  Black Power reenergized black culture through dance and clothing.

4. Led by leaders like Huey Newton, Bobby Seale, Elbridge Cleaver Promoted violence as a form of revolution By its peak it had nearly 2,000 members

5. MARTIN LUTHER KING’S EARLY LIFE  Grew up the son of a Baptist Minister in Atlanta Georgia.  Left High School early to attend Morehouse College, attended seminary in Pennsylvania, and graduated from Boston University with a PHD.  Became a pastor in Montgomery Alabama at the age of 24.

MALCOLM LITTLE’S EARLY LIFE  Father was killed because he was a civil rights activist.  Lived in Omaha Nebraska and Lansing Michigan.  Dropped out of school and got involved in drug dealing, gambling, racketeering, robbery and prostitution.  Sent to prison for 6 years.  Converts to Islam in Prison, after his release he becomes a Minister for the Nation of Islam.  Changes his last name to X because it is a slave name.

7. MARTIN LUTHER KING’S IDEOLOGY  Expose the racism, prejudice, discrimination and brutality that existed in the Southern United States.  Use non-violent means to highlight the violence, and ensure support.  Use civil disobedience to promote the change he wanted.

8. MALCOLM’S IDEOLOGY  Believed African Americans should stand up and fight for their freedom.  Believed violence was necessary to earn freedom.  Leaned toward communist view points.  Believed that the Christian religion was based on the white culture.

9. KING’S MOVEMENT  Martin Luther King  Southern Christian Leadership conference.  Created to harness the moral authority and organize the power of black churches to conduct non-violent protests in order to promote civil rights reform.  Used media coverage to expose Jim Crow laws.  King would later win the Nobel Peace Prize.

MALCOLM’S MOVEMENT  Malcolm X  Nation of Islam  Taught that Africans belonged at the top of the social order.  “Whites” were the devil and only took advantage of the black race.  Advocated political and economic black independence.  He would later leave the Nation of Islam, and convert to true Islam and change his view on Whites and Blacks.

11.  Martin Luther King  One of the most widely revered figures in American History.  Achieved legislation (Voting Rights Act and Civil Rights Act)  He was shot outside a hotel in Memphis, Tennessee in 1968.  Malcolm X  Tensions arose between Malcolm and the Nation of Islam.  Malcolm said he would defend himself against death threats.  He was shot 16 times during a speech in 1965.

12.  February 14 th, 1965- Malcolm X’s house if fired bombed.  On February 21, 1965, Malcolm X was preparing to address the Organization of Afro- American Unity in Manhattan's Audubon Ballroom.  Malcolm X was shot a total of 21 times with a sawed off shotgun and two semi automatic weapons

13.  MLK was staying at the Lorraine Motel in Memphis, Tenn.  King is standing on his balcony when he shot.  King was pronounced dead at 7:05pm on April 4 th, 1968. King was only 39yrs old.  James Earl Ray was later arrested for the murder of MLK.
