WATER

FUNCTION OF WATER  Helps transports substances (Vitamin B&C)  Accounts for blood volume  Protects and lubricates our joints and tissues  Helps maintains body tempatature

ELECTROLYTES  Sodium  Potassium  Phosphorous  Chloride  These are minerals that help maintain fluid balance  They enable nerves to respond to stimuli  They signal muscles to contract

HOW WE LOOSE FLUIDS  Urine  Sweat  Vomitting  Diarrhea  Blood loss  Blood donation  Surgery  Fever  Fluid is continuously exhaled through lungs as we breathe

Water: 50%-70% of a healthy adults body weight is fluid. Water is essential to life. Depending on your age, weight, sex, size, and activity level it is important to drink half your body weight in fluids. Hyponatremia: Water intoxication by drinking too much water too quickly. It dilutes the blood sodium concentration and kidneys have to work harder.(very rare) Hypernatremia: Abnormally high blood sodium concentration. Can lead to high blood pressure, edema, congestive heart failure.

DEHYDRATION  When we do not drink enough water. One of the leading causes of death around the world. CAUSES:  Diarrhea  Fever  Vomiting  Burns  Poorly controlled diabetes  Abuse of diuretics

HEAT RELATED ILNESSES Heat Cramps: muscle cramps(abdomen, arms, and legs) usually occurs during heavy exercise. Caused by fluid and electrolytes imbalances. Heat Exhaustion: increased thirst, muscle weakness, nausea, elevated blood pressure and pulse, sweating. Usually caused by heavy exercise. Heat Stroke: failure of the body’s heat-regulating mechanism. A person will be hot, dry, rapid pulse, disorientated, shallow breathing.

 The human body does not have the capacity to store water so it must be continuously replaced each day.  All beverages are not created equal.  Caffeine dehydrates body.  Beverages with added sugars are adding empty calories to your diet.  Decaffeinated teas and coffees contribute to fluid intake.  Energy drinks have excessive amounts of caffeine and sugar.

WATER/TAP  Labels do not give out too much information.  Look for bottled water source.  Look for phone number on water bottle so see what type of filtration system they use.  Some treatment methods of bottled water may not be sanitary or up to code.

ASSIGNMENT  Read page #247. Answer questions #1 and #2.
