{ Animal Farm-Ch.2 By: Marcelle Chamoun-Farah Whitney Lesueur Michael Barnard

  Summary   Beginning   Old Major dies   The animals make preparations to carry out the old major’s dying wish of gaining control of the farm.   The pigs   The work of teaching and organizing falls to the pigs, the cleverest of the animals   Napoleon and Snowball   Silver-tongued pig, Squealer

  Moses, the raven   Spreads tales of Sugarcandy Mountain, where animals go when they die   The animals find great appeal in the idea of Sugarcandy Mountain   The pigs work very hard to convince the other animals of the falsehood of Moses’ teachings.

  The Revolution   Jones gets drunk and forgets to feed the animals.   The cows break into the store shed and the animals begin to eat the food   Mr. Jones and his men discover them and begin to whip the cows   The animals become angry at the men, attack them, and chase them from the farm   Mollie was hiding

  Post-Revolution   The animals are thrilled to be free   They destroy all the reminders of Jones (ribbons, whips, bits, dog chains, etc…)   Many of the animals find the principles of Animalism difficult to understand, so…   The principles of Animalism are set forth in the simplified form of The Seven Commandments   The animals sing “Beasts of England” seven times   The farmhouse is preserved as a museum

  Differentiation between the pigs and other animals   The pigs have taught themselves how to read   Snowball replaces the inscription “Manor Farm,” with “Animal Farm.”   Snowball and Napoleon put the principles of Animalism into seven key commandments   Squealer paints these commandments on the side of the barn

  Foreshadowing   The milk from the cows had disappeared   When questioned, Napoleon says that the milk has been “attended to.”

  3 important quotes   "THE SEVEN COMMANDMENTS 1. Whatever goes upon two legs is an enemy. 2. Whatever goes upon four legs, or has wings, is a friend. 3. No animal shall wear clothes. 4. No animal shall sleep in a bed. 5. No animal shall drink alcohol. 6. No animal shall kill any other animal. 7. All animals are equal." pg. 24-25   “The pigs now revealed that during the past three months they had taught themselves to read and write from a spelling book which had belonged to Mr. Jones’s children and which had been thrown on the rubbish heap.”   “‘Never mind the milk, comrades!’ cried Napoleon, placing himself in front of the buckets. ‘That will be attended to.’ “

  Chapter 2 Questions   What causes the animals to finally rebel against Mr. Jones and his four farmhands?   Answer:   They were tired of not being fed because Mr. Jones was too drunk to remember to feed them.   How does the behavior of the pigs foreshadow their eventual leadership positions?   Answer:   They take advantage of the ignorance of the other animals which foreshadows their future seizing of power.
