Amen Lord Jesus, Carpenter and Healer, we ask that you look upon those multitudes In Tijuana who have too little to eat, have too little shelter, and struggle each day to find work and ways to care for their family.

8 Our Tijuana Contacts  Fr. Jesse – priest at San Eugenio & main point of contact for Tijuana Ministry in San Eugenio Parish.  Celina – CCM Director in TJ and co-coordinator with our Children’s Program. Assists with site logistics.  Rosita – Manages our local cooks  Jose – Rosita’s husband, helps as needed.  Francisco (Poncho) – Oversees pre-trip site work and on-site construction workers and helpers.  We will invite families we are building for and previously built for to join us for dinners.

9 Paperwork Due Now  Pay Travel Fees – On line or check - $400  Get Passport - Everyone needs a current US passport which expires October 2016 or later. Visa not required if US Citizen. Some resident aliens must apply for visas ASAP  Complete Medical Information Form, Copy Medical ID card  Adult Release Form and BASICS Waiver Form  Fingerprinting (LiveScan) from Diocese of San Jose for age 18+  Diocesan Safe Envirnoment Live Training Certificate 13 and older  Youth Forms:  Youth Release  Youth Code of Conduct  Youth Contract and Discipline Policy  Permission for Unaccompanied Youth

11 Transportation  Week 1 leaves Saturday, June 25 at 6 a.m. Week 2 leaves Saturday, July 9 6 a.m. from St. Julies  Passport check before leaving San Jose.  480 miles from San Jose to La Marita area of Tijuana, Otay Mesa Border Crossing.  About 8-10 hour drive. Carpool 3-5 per vehicle.  Caravan with others, in phone contact throughout.  Stop on you own for lunch along Highway 5.  Arrive Chula Vista by 4 p.m. (eat and gas up).  All meet in Chula Vista to cross border together.  One Spanish speaking person per car, if possible. Please notify Joan Mibach if there is someone you wish to ride with that is not a family member. Notify if you are not traveling with the caravan.

12 Transportation - Drivers  Reimbursement for gas - save receipts.  Caravan Techniques – Keep in phone contact with Caravan Team Leaders.  Caravan over border – Otay Mesa border crossing.  Border Etiquette – no talking, answer only necessary questions. Cover of Binder has mission purpose in Spanish to show if needed.  Need Mexican Auto Insurance (Baja Bound)  BASICS will coordinate  Drivers need to complete the Baja Insurance Application  Drivers have copies of passanger’s health and emergency records in a special binder in each car. Also contains cell phones of people in other cars.

13 Where We Stay, continued  Compound is enclosed and gated with 24/7 security  2 story dormitory with 4 private bathrooms on each floor with shower, sink, and toilet.  Men on bottom floor, Women on top floor.  Some cots provided, consider bringing your own. Only single wide blow up mattresses.  Main kitchen and dining room site where breakfast and dinner served  Town is one of the poorest, very transient area. 14 Where We Stay, Continued  Compound is enclosed and gated with 24/7 security. About 1 mile from TII.  1 story building with kitchen area, chapel, classrooms, outdoor shaded tables.  Separated men’s and women’s dorms.  6 showers, sinks and toilets in each dorm.  Breakfast and Dinner will be served at Terrazas II.  Terrazas I is where we park trailers, tools and cars.  May have a few men staying at T1 during Week 2 Terrazas I Site

15 Where We Stay 2016 will be largest trip in our 12 year history, 118 travelers. Week 1 travelers will all stay at Terrazas II. We may need a few adult travelers to stay at Terrazas I for Week 2. Locations about 1 mile away from each other, both fully secured with 24/7 on site security. All Teens and parents of teen travelers will be staying at Terrazas II. Our children’s, teens, and mothers programs will operate at Terrazas II.

16 What We Eat  Some food brought from US; fresh food bought locally  Home Site | Cook Team prepares breakfast each day (variety of hot & cold choices)  Home Site / Cook Team prepare lunches for Building Teams (sack lunches of sandwiches, fruits, snacks, drinks). Also prepares daily snack for children. Program staff on site prepare own lunch.  Lunches delivered to build sites about 10:30 a.m.  Some dinners cooked by local parish women under Cook Team guidance and direction  Vegetables are fully cooked; fruit is carefully washed with bottled water.  Do not buy from local market vendors  Drink only bottled water  Let us know of special dietary restrictions (on application form)

18 Liturgy, Spirituality, Reflection Our mission provides time for travelers to participate in liturgy, connect with the local community to understand the local situation, and to reflect on our experiences in Tijuana. Activities include : Mass with the local parishes on Sunday morning and Friday evening. Morning prayer before breakfast. Construction crews provide lunch for the family as a time to get to know each other. Local teens to participate in our programs. Build families come for dinner and share their stories. Evening Reflection including a several guest presenters. Day time visits to school for the disabled, aids clinic, medical clinic, and previous build sites. House Blessings. Game Night and Talent Show Night.

19 Personal Safety Safety in the Surrounding Area  We are guests. Act and dress conservatively.  Be cognizant of the poverty around us.  Crime and drugs exist in the area – just like at home. We are about an hour drive from the main border where drug trafficking exists.  We have not had a bad experience in 12 years.  Avoid creating temptation. Don’t leave items in visible places.  Don’t bring valuables on the trip (laptops, expensive cameras, credit cards, jewelry, etc). NO WiFi in the compounds.  Use fanny-packs or backpacks versus purses or bags  Bring only enough $$ to buy food on drive to/from Tijuana  We don’t go shopping. May invite local craftspersons to show their wares on compound for sale.

20 Personal Safety Safety in the Compound  The compounds are enclosed and gated; 24-hr security provided. Cars also stay within the secure compound.  Site has a local parish caretaker living on grounds.  Communication via radios and cell phones between sites, compound. No WiFi available  Do not leave the compound except for scheduled events and programs. Stay in groups outside the compound. No 1-on-1 with teens.  Keep passport on your person.  Keep the sleeping buildings locked during the day.  Keep your belongings together in the sleeping areas.

21 Safety - Your Health  Bring your own water bottle.  Stay hydrated; drink plenty of water. Urine should be light yellow  Modern medical clinic within miles.  Drink and rinse with bottled water provided only – even brushing teeth. Large containers of water provided by home site.  Don’t drink local tap water or eat local food. Risk of getting ill.  First Aid people and kits at each site and compounds. Emergency response instructions at each site.  Make sure your tetanus is up to date (especially if working construction). No need to get special shots or immunizations, Hepatitis A vaccine recommended by not required.  Sun protection: sunscreen, hats with neck protection, long-sleeve shirts, bandanas. Insect repellent with min. 20% Deet.

22 Safety - The Zika Virus  The CDC has issued an alert for travel to areas where Zika virus is spreading. http://www.cdc.gov/zika/http://www.cdc.gov/zika/  Virus is reported in Mexico.  Avoid virus by avoiding mosquito bites – travelers should use insect repellent containing 20% Deet. (products include Cutter Backwoods and Off! Deep Woods). We will have available for all travelers.  Most concerning for women who are pregnant. Men and women considering pregnancy up to three months after travel should consult a doctor.

23 Cell Phones that work in Mexico are a benefit for communications while in Tijuana. Let us know if your cell phone will work in Mexico. If you take a cell phone, suggest getting international phone coverage before you leave the US. No WiFi available. TURN OFF DATA ROAMING BEFORE CROSSING THE BORDER. Safety – Cell Phone Usage

24 A Few Rules  We are guests. Be respectful of the local culture.  No alcohol in the compounds or job sites.  Evening meetings are mandatory.  No toilet paper in the toilets. If you forget, you fish it out – scoopers provided!  Minimal use of electric appliances like hair dryers.  Don’t give money or gifts to people on the street. It sets the wrong message (i.e. pity, favoritism, beggar mentality).  Gifts are only given through the programs, e.g: to the families for whom we are building the kids in the Children’s Program families who participate in our community talk as thank-you.

25 Packing  Pack light, comfortable, reusable.  No laundry on-site.  Pack your own toiletries.  Nothing fancy – nice casual for Mass.  Bring own towel, sleeping bag, pillow, blanket, linens.  We have some cots – suggest you bring your own light weight cot.  Sleeping space limited. PLEASE only single wide inflatable mattresses and sleeping pads.  Bring ear plugs if you’re light sleeper – snoring, barking, roosters.  Handout - Personal Packing List.  Check website for recommended additional items for construction workers.

26 Gifts for Our Families  Gifts will be presented during the House Blessings.  We present a framed display board and photo signed by all participants during that week.  We provide loaded backpacks for the children of the families we build for.  We provide a reusable storage container of food and household items.

29 Construction Program CONSTRUCTION TEAM TRAVELERS SHOULD BRING: Shoes or boots with soles that cannot be penetrated by a nail. Long pants Long sleeves Hard hats Work gloves Safety glasses/goggles May want own tool belt Min 20 oz. Framing hammer with smooth face, wood handle Water Bottle. SITE SAFETY Ride to and from construction sites with the same driver. Teens do not leave work sites without Leader approval. Re-apply sunscreen and insect repellent. DRINK PLENTY OF WATER. Ask if unsure of tools, methods, stability of structure, roof, etc. Think Safety at all times.
