2  Immigration- the process of people moving from one country to a different one  Migration- movement  Prejudice- the unfair feeling of hate or dislike for people of a certain group  Reservations- lands set aside for the American Indians

3  Kyutaro Abiko- Started the Yamato Colony, a Japanese farming community in the Central Valley in 1904.  Colonel Allen Allensworth- A former slave who led a group to build Allensworth in the San Joaquin Valley.  Chief Kientepoos ( Captain Jack)- Chief of the Modoc tribe who fought for 3 years. 4  Solvang- Denmark immigrants built this community in 1910 in the Santa Ynes Valley  Allensworth- a town built in 1908 by a group of African Americans including Colonel Allen Allensworth. The town was built as a solution to discrimination.  Yamato Colony- a Japanese farming town in the Central Valley started by Kyutaro Abiko in 1904. Solvang, California

6  Population in the US increased drastically between the late 1800s and early 1900s  Immigrants came from Europe, Asia, South America, and Central America  Immigrants could be held on Angel Island for as short as two weeks and as long as 2 years

7  Newcomers brought their skills to the US  Their skills included farming, fishing, writing, teaching, etc.  Newcomers also brought crops from their hometown  They brought and grew foods such as strawberries, grapes, rice, figs, melons, olives, and pistachio nuts

8  in the 1870s, many people were facing hard times in the US  Chinese, African Americans, and other races faced discrimination

9 Mamie Tape was banned from a public school, due to the fact that she had not gotten her vaccination yet Mary Tape, her mother, wrote in a letter to the newspaper“ It seems no matter how a Chinese may live and dress…….. They are hated”

10 1842 - 1914 born a slave in Kentucky, but he escaped slavery started Allensworth- a town built by African American slaves as a solution to discrimination in 1863, he joined the US Army to fight in the Civil War

11  Why were some immigrants kept on Angel Island for so long?  Why was Mamie Tape banned from a public school?  What happened to the CA Indians and why was it unfair?  How could the amount of water a town gets affect the population?  What are some other solutions African Americans could have used instead of founding Allensworth?
