2 Earliest English Settlements Roanoke founder was Sir Walter Raleigh In 1585, he and 100 men settled in Roanoke Virginia. After a hard winter they left. In 1587, 91 men, 17 women, and 9 children went back to Roanoke. This group was led by John White.

3 Earliest English Settlements Cont… The first English baby born in America was John White’s granddaughter. Her name was Virginia Dare. White went back to England for supplies for the colony. He intended to be there for 3 months but because of the war in England he was delayed 3 years. When he finally returned to the colony there was no proof the colony ever existed except for the word “CROATOAN” carved on a gatepost.

The Virginia Company was a joint-stock company in which investors buy stock in company to share in future profits. Captain John Smith is credited for being the founder. James town was named in honor of King James I.

5 Jamestown Virginia Jamestown was a charter colony. *A Charter is a document that gives the holder the right to organize settlements in an area. *Charter Colony is a colony that is settled by a group of people that have a charter!!

7 Jamestown, Virginia Cont… John Smith was not well liked. He forced the settlers to work in order to make the colony successful. The local natives, led by chief Powhatan, gave Smith corn to feed the colony. In 1609, 400 more setters arrived. Smith returned to England and the colony began to fail. During the harsh winter of 1610 many colonists died. More colonists arrived that year and only found 60 survivors.

11 Jamestown, Virginia Cont… Tobacco Saves Jamestown!! John Rolfe, a colonist, learned how to grow tobacco using seeds from the West Indies Company. In 1614 the 1 st crop was sold to England. Tobacco became the leading cash crop.

12 Early Colonial Tobacco 1618 1618 — Virginia produces 20,000 pounds of tobacco. 1622 1622 — Despite losing nearly one-third of its colonists in an Indian attack, Virginia produces 60,000 pounds of tobacco. 1627 1627 — Virginia produces 500,000 pounds of tobacco. 1629 1629 — Virginia produces 1,500,000 pounds of tobacco.

14 Jamestown, Virginia Cont… Rolfe married Pocahontas, Daughter of Chief Powhatan, and the relations with the Indians improved dramatically.

15 Jamestown, Virginia Cont… In 1619 the Virginia Company let Jamestown set up a government with some say in how things were run. The new government was called the Virginia House of Burgesses.

16 Jamestown Virginia Cont… The House of Burgesses 10 towns sent 2 representatives (burgesses) to set up the new government and make local laws for the colony. This was the first representative government set up in America. A representative Government is one where the people elect officials to represent them in the government.

18 These are Burgesses: People sent to the House of Burgesses to represent the towns…They were elected!! (remember…we just talked about this!!)

19 Jamestown, Virginia Cont… In 1619 the first Africans were brought to Jamestown. 20 were sold to Virginia planters. They may have come as servants at first. Until 1640 Africans were laborers and some even owned property. In 1660 Slavery was recognized in Virginia. This was the beginning of the slave trade
