1 Job Hazard Analysis (JHA) for the Calibration Lab By Chad Paszternak, SCE

2 Why is JHA Important?  It’s routine  It’s new  We’re under pressure  Potential for injury  Serious injury and lost time is bad for all!

3 JHA is the Answer  What are some potential hazards?  How do we mitigate or eliminate them?  How do we reduce the likelihood of injury?

4 OK, What is JHA?  It is a methodology used to create consistency in:  Identifying  Documenting  Mitigating or  Eliminating Hazards relating to a job.

5 The Basics  There are four basic stages to a JHA  They are:  Select a job  Break the job down  Identify potential hazards  Determine preventive measures

6 How do I start a JHA?  You have to prioritize  Factors to consider:  Accident frequency of severity  Potential for serious injury or illness  Newly established  Modified  Infrequently performed

7 Breaking it down Step Potential Accident/Hazard Preventive Action/Measure Inspect UUT, Standard, hoses, & Fittings Connect UUT to Standard Select Weights and place on standard platform Perform leak test and calibration Remove pressure from system and weights from platform

8 Identifying Hazards  Questions you can ask:  Do any tools, accessories, or equipment present any hazards?  Can something get pinched, smashed, or exposed?  Is there a chance of a strain?  Is noise or vibration a problem?

9 Step Potential Accident/Hazard Preventive Action/Measure Inspect UUT, Standard, hoses, & Fittings Connect UUT to Standard Select Weights and place on standard platform Perform leak test and calibration Remove pressure from system and weights from platform

10 High Pressure Fitting (correct) Pipe Thread (wrong) High Press. Fitting Teflon won’t fix everything!!!

12 Step Potential Accident/Hazard Preventive Action/Measure Inspect UUT, Standard, hoses, & Fittings * Catastrophic equipment failure could lead to serious injury or death. *Contaminated equipment and hardware could lead to system degradation and potential failure. Connect UUT to Standard *Catastrophic equipment failure could lead to serious injury or death. Select Weights and place on standard platform * Strains, sprain, back injury, hand injury, and foot injury. *Over pressurization could lead to serious injury or death. Perform Leak Test and calibration *Strains, sprain, back injury, hand injury, and foot injury. *Over pressurization could lead to serious injury or death. Remove pressure from system and weights from Standard platform *Damage to Standard (could lead to future hazard) *Strains, sprain, back injury, hand injury, and foot injury.

14 Controlling the Hazard  Four Measures in order of preference:  Eliminate the hazard  Contain the hazard  Revise work procedures  Reduce the exposure

16 Step Potential Accident/Hazard Preventive Action/Measure Inspect UUT, Standard, hoses, & Fittings * Catastrophic equipment failure could lead to serious injury or death. *Contaminated equipment and hardware could lead to system degradation and potential failure. *Ensure proper cleaning of equipment, hoses, and fittings *Know how to identify fittings and hoses for damage and pressure ratings *Discard damaged/ suspect hardware *Ensure piston cylinder installed to cover range *Use safety shields and glasses Connect UUT to Standard *Catastrophic equipment failure could lead to serious injury or death. *Ensure fittings are compatible and snug tight Select Weights and place on standard platform * Strains, sprain, back injury, hand injury, and foot injury. *Over pressurization could lead to serious injury or death. *Use proper lifting techniques *Ask for assistance *Be aware of pinch points *Use appropriate footwear *Ensure weights do not exceed full scale of Std or UUT

17 Step Potential Accident/Hazard Preventive Action/Measure Perform Leak Test and calibration *Strains, sprain, back injury, hand injury, and foot injury. *Over pressurization could lead to serious injury or death. *Use proper lifting techniques *Ask for assistance if needed *Be aware of pinch points *Slowly increase pressure *Be aware of actual input pressure and equipment range *Use safety glasses and safety shield Remove pressure from system and weights from Standard platform *Damage to Standard (could lead to future hazard) *Strains, sprain, back injury, hand injury, and foot injury. *Slowly decrease pressure *Use proper lifting techniques and ask for assistance if needed *Be aware of pinch points *Use appropriate footwear
