8. Roanoke Colony English settlers to start a colony in North America. The ship landed at Roanoke Island in what is now North Carolina, and the captain headed back to England to get more supplies. By the time the boat returned, the new colonists had so angered the local Indians, they had to return to England. A second try at a colony in 1587 also failed. This time 90 men, 17 women and nine children vanished, leaving only two clues: the word “Cro” carved on a tree and “Croatoan”—the name of the local Indian tribe—carved on a gatepost. The mystery of the Lost Colony haunts historians to this day. It was not a good beginning to England’s attempts to start a colony.

54. The first English colony to be established in the New World was on the island of Roanoke just off the coast of present day North Carolina. England established the Roanoke Island colony for economic reasons (wanted to make a lot of money off of the colony). They hoped to expand trade and increase the nation’s wealth. This colony, however, was plagued by shortages of supplies and unfriendly Indians. England’s hopes for this new settlement ended in 1590 when ships carrying supplies from England arrived to find the colony abandoned and the settlers missing. Even today, historians still do not agree on what really happened to this “Lost Colony.” Why did they establish Roanoke Island? What happened to the colony? What is it now called?

58. A group of people called the Pilgrims in 1620 founded the next successful English colony. They were also called separatists because they wanted to be separate from the Church of England. Being separate meant being disobedient to the king, however, so they decided to leave England in search of a safe place to practice their religion. They were avoiding religious persecution. They set sail for America on a ship called the Mayflower and landed on the shores of what is now the state of Massachusetts. They called their colony Plymouth. What are the Pilgrims also called? 65. The last American colony called Georgia was settled almost forty years later in 1733. In England, if you did not pay back the money you owe, they sent you to prison (debtor’s prison). Many people died in those prisons and it was nearly impossible to get out of the prisons. People who had been imprisoned in England for not paying their debts settled it. They came to the new world with hopes of a new beginning and economic freedom. They wanted to start a new life without debt. Who settled Georgia? Why did they settle Georgia?
