Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Statistics Lecture 2 – Introduction to MS Excel 2003

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Introduction Excel can create and manipulate spreadsheets, it can also produce graphs (charts), etc. MS Excel 2003 is a part of the Microsoft Office 2003 suite of programs a practical example 

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Opening Excel Start >> Programs >> Microsoft Office >> Microsoft Office Excel 2003 (OS Windows) a worksheet is a table of values arranged in rows and columns each value is stored in a cell

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Navigating the spreadsheet using keyboard: arrows (up, down, left, right), Tab button (move one cell to the right), Enter button (confirm and move one cell down) using mouse: click the cursor into a cell

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Entering data manually: click the left mouse button to select a desired cell and start typing (confirm by pressing the Enter button) copying: copy and paste data stored in other sources (database, document, web page, etc.)

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA It’s your turn! please tell me 15 numbers from 1 to 5 representing grades at the primary school Thank you!

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Simple formulas basic operations with numbers: addition  +subtraction  - multiplication  *division  / other operators: exponentiation  ^ all formulas begin with an equals (=) sign!

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Priority of operators what will be done first! priority of operators: 1. exponentiation 2. multiplication, division 3. addition, subtraction Ex. 5 2 +3/2  14 but Excel gives a result 26.5 WHY? because 5 2 +3/2 and (5 2 +3/2) makes a difference use brackets to change the order of evaluation

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Replication of formulas (1) 1.select the cell which contains the original formula, 2.click the bottom right corner of the selection box, and drag down several rows, 3.Excel will automatically calculate the result 4.if the values in cells change, the result will be automatically recalculated

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Replication of formulas (2)

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Cell references (1) can be either absolute (A3) or relative ($A$3, $A3 or A$3) a dollar symbol ($) is used to fix a reference $A$3 – value in the cell A3 will always be the same when replicating the formula $A3 – values in column A will always be the same A$3 – values in row 3 will always be the same

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Cell references (2)

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Charts (1) a graphical representation of the data in your worksheet Excel offers many different chart types the commonly used are: bar graphs (charts), pie charts, line plot, scatter plot 1.select the data to be displayed in the chart 2.click on the chart wizard and follow the instructions

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Charts (2)

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Data analysis (1) a set of data analytic tools (Analysis ToolPak) that can be used to develop complex statistical analyses (i.e.. ANOVA, regression, hypothesis testing, etc.; Tools >> Data Analysis) if the Data Analysis command is not available, you need to load the Analysis ToolPak add-in program (Tools >> Add-Ins, check the option Analysis ToolPak >> OK).

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Data analysis (2)

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Data analysis (3)

Ing. Martina Majorová, FEM SUA Save your work from the menu: File >> Save (as) keyboard shortcut: Ctrl + S
