HEALTH IN THE CURRICULUM

During the children's time at Little Reddings primary school, we as a staff try to imbed a belief and understanding of what makes a healthy life style. This is clearly evident in many subjects across our curriculum and in our extra curricular activities available during and after the school day. Here is a list of some of the areas in school where the message of healthy living is clearly evident ▪PE ▪Science ▪PSHE ▪Children's University ▪School lunches and healthy snack times.

HEALTH IN THE CURRICULUM ▪Physical education. PE is of big importance at Little Reddings primary school. All children have high quality PE sessions run by the class teachers in Early years and year 1 and by qualified sports coaches from CSE in years 2 through 6. Children are given opportunities to take part in inter schools competition against other schools. This year alone we have competed in hockey, basketball, cross country, football and speed stacking competitions. With more competitions to come in the summer term. During our lessons we encourage all children regardless of their ability to fully join in all activities. As well as focusing on the health benefits of PE we also feel that it encourages good self esteem and many opportunities to develop team work skills.

HEALTH IN THE CURRICULUM ▪Science In the schools science curriculum we also cover many areas that focused on Healthy living. Year 1 – Looking at the human body and healthy eating. Year 2 – Growing up and taking care of ourselves Year 3 – Amazing bodies (looking at the human body) Year 4 – Animals including humans ( looks at the diet of animals and humans) Year 5 - Animals including humans ( looks at the diet of animals and humans) Year 6 – The Human circulatory system.

HEALTH IN THE CURRICULUM ▪Children's University This initiative was taken on board by Little Reddings primary school last year. Now in its second year it has gone from strength to strength, ably lead by Mr. Gray. Children's university's main aim is to encourage children to be more involved in extra curricular activities. This includes club run by us during and after school and also clubs the children may attend outside of school. CU has over 40 school run clubs this year with a large percentage being health or sports based. We offer football, archery, judo, cricket gymnastics, skateboarding, fitness, gardening, rounder's', cheerleading and rugby. Our hope is that joining these school clubs will encourage children to continue these sports by joining clubs outside of school. This has been a success so far with many of our judo members who have joined a local judo club. With this in mind we have built great links with both Watford FC and Arsenal FC, whom have offered extra sports/literacy clubs to encourage more participation in sport. With the Arsenal FC club we focused on girls this year to again encourage more participation in sport by girls at Little Reddings.

HEALTH IN THE CURRICULUM At Little Redding's we always encourage healthy eating. Healthy snacks – Children are given time during the morning to have a healthy snack. This must be something healthy such as fruit or vegetables. This should NOT be chocolate or crisps. Water – water is available in all classes throughout the day. children may wish to bring in their own water bottles. These are NOT to be filled with fizzy or sparkling drinks. School lunches – children have several choices on our more healthy school menu. Children have the choice of a meat or vegetarian dish, jacket potato or sandwich. There is also salad available
