Biomes of the World Take notes and practice

Terrible smells are coming from ponds- A Probably bacteria decomposing the organic material

1- What biome is shown here?

In the USA, we have tropical Rainforest in Hawaii-B Non-continental USA, we also have Tundra but, again not in the continental US

Grazing Animals - C In the grasslands the large mammals are grazers

Walleye-D Long powerful body, that lives in open waters and that eats small fish

Tropical Rain Forest - E Gets over 200 cm of rain per year

As you travel across the USA-F West of Missouri, grasslands become deserts. East of Missouri, grasslands become forests.

Whales have blubber or thick fat layers - G To insulate them from the cold, cold waters

Deciduous Forest- H Animals that live there

A possum fainting when it sees a snake - I A behavioral adaptation

Jackrabbits very big ears-J In the hot climate, the animal can shed heat quickly this way

2- What biome is shown here?

3- What biome is this?

4- What biome is this ??

5- What Biome is this?

6- What biome is this?

7- What biome covers most of the Earth?

8- What biome is probably the smallest?

9- What biome is part land and part water?

10- What biome has permafrost?

11- Abiotic factors are non-living, which of these best shows this?

12- Biotic Factors are living things. Which of these is this?

13- The oceans food chain base is?

14- Ocean meets the land here. Intertidal zone

15-Adapting to fast moving water *attach to rocks, like algae *hide under rocks, like insects Burrowing into the mud, like clams and mussels YES-some tadpoles have a suction cup!

16-Plants can grow in the water, If enough light penetrates For example the littoral zone, there is plenty of light

17-Deep water creatures live off of. Dead organisms that sink from above

18- A lake or a pond can become a forest if Over time enough sediment fills up the lake so land plants can grow

19- plankton get food, ex: phytoplankton By photosynthesis

20- Most nutrients in the Rain Forest are found… In the plants, so the soil is actually poor

21- If a pond fills up with sediment One day it could become a forest

23-Fresh water is mainly affected by How quick the water moves. This makes a difference in how much oxygen is in the water

24- Most diverse biome is The rain forest

25- Swamps (a type of wetland) Are different because they have trees growing in them

26- When an area returns to its original form, after a fire or bull dozing This is called secondary succession The land is returning to its normal form for a second time, take years and years

27- new word Eutrophication When a lake or pond dies!

Jack Rabbits very long ears A jack rabbitMuch excess body heat is given off by the blood vessels in the large ears. This helps to cool the animal down.

28- Rain forest trees have wide large leaves This is so they can collect as much sun as possible

29 – Desert plants Store water but also have long roots that spread out over a large surface area

30- Deciduous Forest Animals Need the trees for food and shelter

Phytoplankton *31* Need the sun to make food They are tiny plants that float around in the water

Biome *32* Large area that has a certain climate and plant life

Wetlands help * 33* With flood control, they act like a sponge

Estuary*34* Where salt water meets fresh water Like the mouth of a river

Grasslands*35* Have really good soil That is why we grow so much food there

Nocturnal*36* Active at night Like desert animals Because it is so much cooler

Ponds*37* Are their own ecosystem

Grasslands are the heart of American crop production CornWheat

A biome is An area with similar climates, plants, and animals It is a recognizable place
