Participating in awareness month’s November: Prematurity Awareness Month Any event for The Eliminate Project Clean-ups and beautification projects Organize a K-Family conference or K-Family day of service Host your own charity walk or run, benefiting a charity of your choice Most importantly, implement a “buddy system and plan the groups to ensure that members from different branches are mixed up! What bonding activities are appropriate for all branches of the K-Family (cont.)

Organization: the key to success! Give yourself time to PLAN and PROMOTE Ensure that the date of the event does not conflict with other major events, holidays, or testing periods Ex.: Kiwanis District Convention, Easter, Rosh Hashanah, other religion holidays, finals week Provide proper information regarding logistics prior to the event Provide all possible transportation options and include information regarding parking

Effective Promotion and Communication Evenly promote your event to all branches of the K- Family to have a balanced representation at your event Consider what the most effective means of communication is for each specific branch Ex.: While Facebook may be the preferred means of communication for Key Club members, it is generally not the preferred means of communication for Kiwanians

Delegate Responsibilities Make sure that each branch is responsible for a specific part of the project or event as a whole This allows each branch to feel as if they are a part of the event’s organization rather than another “guest” It will also motivate and encourage members from specific branches to promote the event within their branch of the K-Family Follow up to thank each branch of the K-Family that participated This builds rapport and allows everyone to feel appreciated

K-Kids: What are good projects to do between K-Kids and CKI members? Organize a “parents night out” at a communal center and complete in- house service projects with K-Kids Anything crafty! Holiday cards for retirement or veteran homes Bookmarks for the school or local library Help them organize a book drive for Better World Books Color-A-Smile (http://colorasmile.org) collects colored pages to distribute to senior citizens, troops overseas, and anyone in need of a smilehttp://colorasmile.org

K-Kids: What are good projects to do between K-Kids and CKI members? (cont.) Organize a trivia night such as “Are You Smarter than a CKI-er?” at an elementary school. Charge admission and donate the funds! Hands-on beautification project within or nearby the school Repainting the school’s fence or walls, especially if there is graffiti Picking up garbage Planting trees

K-Kids: Explain the role of a chaperone or parent of a K-Kid member at K-Family projects and events This is dependent on the service project! If it is mainly a K-Kids event, rather than a K-Family event, encourage adults to take a step back in order for the K-Kids to grow and to shine Encourage adults to take a step back by assigning them a “behind the scenes” role K-Kids is not another play date for a child. It is a place for them to learn independence, gain confidence, and develop leadership skills

Builders Club: How to advise a CKI member that has been asked to train Builders Club officers. Remember that club officers from Builders Club are not trained like CKI club officers Do not: Train them with the intention of running for higher office in the future Train them to run a district board meeting (There is no district board in Builders Club) Do: Instill leadership Instill the concept of “taking the initiative” Provide advice on organization and planning Motivate!

Key Club: How can I interact with my local Key Club? Look up Key Clubs on the Kiwanis One website to get information on the club’s advisor Look up contact information for the local Key Club Lieutenant Governor by asking your District Governor or by checking out the Key Club District’s website Interact as early as possible Introduce yourselves via e-mail Invite them to your next event Tag along to their next event Begin planning your own project

Key Club: What are Youth Protection Guidelines (YPG)? YPG are designed to ensure the safety and protection of all SLP members Key Club members are generally under 18 years of age and may require parental permission. Run your ideas with their faculty advisor, sponsoring Kiwanis club or Kiwanis board to ensure that you are on the same page CKI members may not friend request a Key Club member on Facebook The most appropriate means of communication is e-mail when communicating with Key Club members or members from any SLP For more information, check out the YPG resource: http://www.circlek.org/Libraries/Resources_Recruitment_Retention/Thin gs_You_Should_Know_About_Youth_Protection_Guidelines.sflb.ashx

Locate other Circle K clubs by reaching out to your District Governor or Lieutenant Governor Collaborate projects such as: Murder mystery Charity gala Field day social Swap calendars and become aware of each other’s upcoming events If your district offers a District Large Scale Service Project, take advantage of it. It will be a great way to make new friends while making an impact.

Aktion Club: How do I start one? Where do they typically exist? Find a Kiwanis sponsor, just as you would when chartering any SLP Coordinate with the Kiwanis sponsor and the agency that coordinates activities for the group of disabled individuals Chartering packet can be found online: http://www.aktionclub.org/join/clubbuilding.aspx Locate your local Aktion Club on the Kiwanis One website Common settings for an Aktion Club are: Adult homes Community centers for developmentally or physically disabled adults Schools that work with disabled individuals

How can CKI co-sponsor another SLP when chartering? Any Circle K club can co-sponsor a SLP, which includes Aktion Club Circle K can work with Kiwanis Help in the chartering process Continue to follow up throughout the year Circle K members oftentimes can better relate with SLP members For more information on chartering an Aktion Club, click here:http://www.aktionclub.org/join/clubbuilding.aspxhttp://www.aktionclub.org/join/clubbuilding.aspx

Contact the agency to ensure that there are no limitations that should be kept in mind Focus on in-house service projects Making dog toys Create birthing mats for The Eliminate Project Make trauma dolls (confirm whether they are capable of using a needle and thread) Create Thanksgiving or other holiday related crafts organize a food drive Focus on tactile activities to keep them engaged!

Kiwanis: What are hands-on projects that are appropriate for CKI to do with the older generation of Kiwanians? Bell ringing at the Salvation Army Restoration of a submarine CKI clubs have joined forces with local Kiwanis clubs to restore a submarine. Kiwanians provided a historical perspective and CKI’s had the chance to do some hands-on service (repainting, removing oil drips, etc.) Hold a garage sale Volunteer at stores such as Barnes and Noble around the holidays in their free gift wrapping program. Keep a tip jar out and donate the money to a charity that you’ve mutually agreed on

Kiwanis: How can I politely request funding from Kiwanis, specifically for District Convention and International Convention? Create a relationship with your sponsoring Kiwanis club and all other local Kiwanis clubs prior to requesting funding Attend meetings Attend events Stay updated with e-mail updates Complete joint projects to help them fundraise for your CKI club Offer a “rent a CKI member” program where CKI members will shovel snow for a Kiwanian or run errands for them

Present your request in-person at a meeting but also bring a hardcopy of your request with you. Be sure to include the following logistics: Name and purpose of the event Date/time Location Explanation of how the event will develop you and your members. How will this benefit the club in the long run? Cost of registration Cost of transportation Cost of housing Thank the Kiwanis club(s) that supported you!

Kiwanis: How can we strengthen relationships when it is hard for members to attend/organize transportation to meetings? Attend events if attending meetings are not a possibility Appoint a K-Family Relations Chair to look deeper into other options Organize carpools Organize a group to take public transportation together Communicate this issue with your Kiwanis club Invite members of the Kiwanis club to come to your meetings and events Don’t forget to provide concrete directions when inviting them onto your campus!

Final pieces of advice Visit, communicate, and maximize interactions with all branches of the K-Family Be proactive and intentional about the connections you wish to make Open all lines of communication Don’t be afraid to get to know everyone Seek help with needed
