4 The Name? “Dust Bowl” came from a journalist who was traveling through the area.

5 Location: in the Great Plains area Texas, Oklahoma, Kansas, Colorado & New Mexico

17 Effects of the Dust Bowl (cont.) More than 25% of the population in the Dust Bowl region migrated to areas where they often faced an even harder life. –N–N–N–Nicknamed “Oakies” (regardless of what state they came from), they were not welcomed by locals who feared that they would take local jobs –M–M–M–Migrant workers lived in poor conditions (tents, no water or electricity)

Bigger Government – Between 1933 and1935 the government launched many programs to help people affected by the Dust Bowl, like the Emergency Relief Appropriation Act, the Resettlement Administration, the Farm Security Administration, the Land Utilization Program and the Drought Relief Service. 23 But some farm owners took advantage of it…

24 The Farm Security Administration (FSA) was originally created to help migrant workers. They built camps, to house workers and their families. Many of these camps provided housing, health services, schools, laundry facilities, and adult-education programs.
