2 Civil Rights Won and Lost Key ? – How were African Americans’ civil rights violated in the decades following Reconstruction? 3 amendments established civil rights. 13 th – banned slavery 14 th – prohibited states from infringing on the rights of citizens, including voting. 15 th - prevented discrimination against voters.

3 Supreme Court Reacts Reversed many civil rights African Americans had gained during Reconstruction. See pg. 874. Plessy v. Ferguson- upheld segregation in Louisiana from whites in railroad cars, separate but equal.

4 The Fight Against Injustice Key ? - How did African Americans react to discrimination and segregation? Jim Crow laws became systematized and widespread. Purpose was to segregate races. African Americans were made to take tests or pay poll taxes. The North discriminated too.

5 Calls for Justice and Equality Grow “The Great Migration”- more than ½ million went to the North looking for jobs. African Americans united in the North by forming the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP). World Wars I and II also strengthened African Americans awareness of their civil rights.
