1 Welcome to 1EG Ms. Garvey & Ms. Lucy

2 Support Teacher Kathy Love is our support teacher and comes to 1EG every morning for reading or writing. She works with groups of students or individual students. She also teaches mini lessons to the whole class.

3 Early Morning Students unpack bags (water bottles, snack, lunch, homework folders). Work on unfinished work or read in the library. Morning meeting- greeting, share, calendar, morning news, announcements.

4 Writing workshop “Creating life long authors” Mini lesson- students learn a skill or strategy of a strong writer. (5-10 min.) Independent writing – students practice the skill discussed in mini lesson & conference with teacher one on one or in small groups. (20- 30 min.) Partner work – students work with partners to discuss and revise their writing. (5-10 min.) Share time - wrap up of the lesson with a summary of the skill taught in the mini lesson. (5 min.)

5 Reading workshop “Fostering the love of reading” Mini lesson - students learn a skill or strategy of a strong reader. (5-10 min.) Independent reading – students practice the skill taught in the mini lesson. Students conference with teacher either one on one or in small groups to learn or practice a specific skill. Partner work – students read with partners & discuss their books. (5-10 min.) (20-30 min.) Share time – wrap up of the lesson with a summary of the skill taught in the mini lesson. (5 min.) Interactive/shared reading (15-20 min.) Read Aloud (15-20 min.)

6 Word Study Phonics + vocabulary +spelling =Word Study The goal of word study is to help students make their own spelling decisions and become thinking spellers, readers and writers.

7 Math Students learn a variety of math skills including; Data and chance Geometry Measurement Numeration Operations and Computation Patterns, Functions and Algebra

8 Word study Students practice a variety of skills including; Phonics Spelling Handwriting Word families (at, an, et, en ) Vocabulary Basic grammar – nouns, verbs and adjectives Skills are taught through a variety of individual and group activities; Educational board games Hands on activities (creating a dictionary, word searches) iPads

9 Science/Social Studies PBL The focus of science and social studies units is to learn and practice inquiry skills. Inquiry skills include; Posing questions Using a range of technologies Predicting Recording data Evaluating Planning Units covered include; Communities Life Science Needs and Wants Physical Science Student as a Learner Earth Science

10 Specials Students participate in a variety of “specials” Art Music Physical Education (P.E.) Language Block Guidance Library Swimming Computer skills

11 CHARACTER STRENGTHS * In 1EG we put a great deal of emphasis on the child’s character. We focus on our individual strengths and how we can foster each other’s strengths.
