1 Services Starter – in pairs discuss the following: What services do you regularly use? How do they affect your quality of life? Daily Services – shops, school, sporting or recreational opportunity Occasional Services – doctors, hospitals, solicitors

2 Learning Objectives To appreciate that there is a pattern to how services are distributed. To see how these services have changed over time

3 Give examples of each of the following services: Leisure and sport – Cultural venues – Health services – Educational services – Religious services – Specialist shops – Public transport services – Other public services -

4 Shopping Services – the CBD The CBD has changed over the years. In the 1980’s it looked like this ( only older). There were no indoor shopping areas or out of town shopping centre, e.g. Teesside Park

5 In the 2000s Times have changed and new shopping centres that have multiple shops under one roof are the norm now. We have out of town shopping centres on the edge of our cities. For many companies this has been disastrous, they have lost business and had to close down.

7 Why have Out of Town shopping centres developed? List as many reasons as possible in 3 minutes as to why you think the ‘Out of Town’ shopping centre has become so popular.

11 Homework: Services in rural areas Living in a small village can reduce the number of services that can be accessed. 1.Name the services available to people living in a village. 2.Explain how technology is increasing their access to more services, e.g. the role of the internet.
