DE Science Elementary “5-Minute Prep” For Sound, Heat, and Light Heat Temperature

Temperature – The Big Ideas Heat is measured with a thermometer as temperature. Hot objects have higher temperatures than cold objects.

Temperature – Prior Knowledge Students understand that some objects are warmer than others. They can use the FUN-damental, Sound, Heat, and Light, to review heat. It will also be helpful if students have:Sound, Heat, and Light –felt the differences in temperatures between room temperature water, hot or warmer water, and ice water. –used a thermometer to measure the air temperature.

Temperature – Common Misconceptions The temperature of an object depends on its size. –Reality: Large objects, i.e. a glacier, can be very cold and small objects, i.e. volcanic ash, can be excessively hot. The temperature is not dependent on the size of an object. Temperature is a property of a particular material or object. (Metal is naturally cooler than plastic). –Reality: Temperature, which is a measurement of heat, is measured on a continuum scale and can vary in time and location even for the same object. For example, a piece of metal might be cold while in a dark, cool room, but become hot when placed in direct sunlight.

Temperature – Using DE Science Content When you close this presentation, you can review the following recommended resources for Temperature. Exploration: TemperatureTemperature Reading Passage: Don’t TouchDon’t Touch Video: Comparing TemperatureComparing Temperature Video: How Temperature and Heat DifferHow Temperature and Heat Differ Use the PowerPoint version of this presentation for hyperlinks to these resources or you can get to them through the browser or search feature.

Temperature – Instructional Ideas Have students measure and record the air temperature in the room and outside at the same time each day for the length of the unit. –Then, have the students graph both sets of data and draw conclusions about the differences between the data sets. Have students research different climates on Earth. –Then, have the students determine how organisms adapt to climate changes from season to season.

State Standards: If you wish to review your state standards regarding Temperature, click here to get to the curriculum standards search feature of DES. http://discoveryeducation.com/forward/curriculum.cfm You can click on any standard to see what resources are available to teach it. Additional Information: For additional content, check the Extend section within the concept.
