GROUP BEHAVIOUR Definition : two or more individuals, interacting and interdependent, to achieve particular objectives Type of groups : formal and informal People join a certain group for a lot of different reasons and people may join different groups for different benefits Five stages of group development : forming (a lot of uncertainty), storming (intra group conflict), norming (assimilation), performing (function well), adjouring (disbandment) Analyzing group interaction : sociogram External conditions imposed on the group : overall policy/strategy, authority structures, formal regulations, performance and reward system, culture, physical work setting

General resources of a group : knowledge, skill, abilities, personality characteristics Group structure : leadership, roles, norm (acceptable standard of behavior), status (social position), size, composition, cohesiveness

UNDERSTANDING WORK TEAMS Team will be more effective than individuals when the tasks require multiple skills, judgement and experiences. Traditional department vs teams work group vs work team Type of team : problem-solving team, self-managed team, cross- functional team, virtual team Creating an effective team
