2 Technology Sparks Industrial Growth
Developments in technology in manufacturing known as Industrial Revolution Industrial Revolution also changed culture, social life, and politics IR began in Great Brittan in the 1700’s with the development of machines powered by steam or flowing rivers.

3 Slater opens 1st Textile Mill
Samuel Slater-comes to the US from England 1793-Pawtucket Rhode Island- builds nations first water powered textile mill This Mill produced 1 part of the textile manufacturing: cotton thread

4 Lowell Builds Fully Operational Mill
Francis Cabot Lowell- Boston Merchant 1811-Tours England’s factory towns in secret Returns and forms a company-The Boston Associates 1813-Build a mill in Waltham Massachusetts Mill housed of the operations in the manufacturing of cloth Lowell Girls-young single girls employed at the mill, lived in boarding houses and closely supervised

5 Factory Work Changes Lives
Machines increased pace and of work and the division of labor into small jobs Machines could be run by untrained workers These type workers were everywhere

6 New Methods of Production
Interchangeable Parts- identical components that could be used in place of one another Improves efficiency in factories Eli Whitney-introduces this idea OLD WAY=make items one at a time from start to finish, RESULT= parts not interchangeable. NEW WAY=manufacture each part separately, and precisely. Makes parts interchangeable

7 Innovation Quickens Communication
1837 American; Samuel F.B. Morse invents electric telegraph How it Works: Electric pulses travel long distances on metal wires as coded signals Code of dots & Dashes=Morse Code This invention allowed information to be delieved almost instantly

8 Agriculture Remains Strong
More goods being traded than ever before in 1860 Farmers adopted new methods of planting, tending and harvesting crops 1840=John Deere-Develops steel plow Cyrus McCormick-mechanical reaper
