In 1900, the British government established a protectorate which lasted until independence in 1960. As British economic and political control spread, so did the efforts of various missionary groups; they were more successful in southern Nigeria than in the north, which was heavily Islamic.  Today, Nigeria is about 50 percent Muslim and 40 percent Christian; about 10 percent of the population still retain the indigenous beliefs portrayed in the novel.
