7 Set the context – where does this come from? This may have an impact on how we view a character or why the M+A is typical or different Work through the extract line by line (there will be a point at least every 3 lines) Select at least 7 quotations You must cover the whole extract (keep an eye out of any changes in behaviour / mood + atmosphere) Speculate – this is a B grade and above skill. ‘This could suggest….’ ‘We may view…’ Use PEE (Point: related to the question; Evidence: a quotation; Explanation: how does your quotation show the point you are showing?) Write around 350-450 words (get used to how much this is in your handwriting, you don’t have time to sit counting words in the exam.

8 How do I revise for Literature, Miss?

9 Practical strategies: If possible, re-read the texts! Audio versions are available on ‘Listening books’. Login: 320926 Password Librarian01 GCSEPod is also full of quick, accessible podcasts to remind you of the plot. Make sure you know all of the key themes for the texts. For example, Of Mice and Men = loneliness, dreams, treatment of women, prejudice… For each theme, make sure you have 6 good ideas about how it is presented in the text. For each character, reduce the plot into 5 key points; have a quotation for each. Planning essays can be just as valuable as writing the full thing. Different ways of planning include; mind-maps (www.bubbl.us), Diamond 9, bullet points.www.bubbl.us

10 Practical strategies for learning quotations: Make it fun! Redecorate your bedroom (or whole house!) with key quotations using Post-it notes. Create flashcards – think about the colours. Use different colours for keywords or themes. Quizlet.com has pre-made online flashcards. Quotation tennis – have a revision partner. How long can you make your quotation rally? For example, focus on the character of Eddie Carbone. Missing words.
