Materials available: Graduated beaker Graduated cylinder Water Scale The clock Tray Ruler String

The Experiment We’ll run through 4 different procedures. As we go through, take down the raw data points that we obtain.

The data so far: Quantitative: –Mass of Unknown # 1 = 59.6 g –Mass of Unknown # 2 = 58.9 g Qualitative: –Neither unknown floats Qualitative: –Unknown #1 “feels like it has yolk” when shaken. –Unknown #4 does not feel like this.

Nichelle’s Procedure Egg chemistry part deux Qualitative: –Unknown # 4 spins faster than Unknown # 1 Quantitative: –Unknown # 4 spun 20 seconds –Unknown #1 spun 4.68 seconds

The raw data: Kahla’s procedure: Unknown egg # 1 = Does not float Unknown egg # 1 causes water to rise from 200 mL level to 250 mL level Unknown egg # 4 does not really float either, but is tilted slightly upward. Unknown egg # 4 also caused water to rise from 200 mL to 250 mL

Joshua’s procedure: Unknown egg # 4 spun longer Matthew: Unknown # 1 spun for 16.44 seconds Matthew: Unknown # 4 spun for 43.25 seconds Kahla: Unknown # 4 spun for 33.85 seconds Kahla: Unknown # 1 spun for 13.37 seconds

Brynton’s procedure Vincent: Known Cooked egg non- transluscent Raw egg non-transluscent (1) and one other observation raw egg is transluscent. Unknown # 1is non-transluscent Unknown # 2 is non-transluscent

Charles’ procedure Raw egg weight: 56.7grams Cooked egg weight: 60.2 grams Unknown # 1: 58.76 grams Unknown # 4 : 57.8 grams

Graph the data! Let’s meander on over to Excel.

Before we break the eggs! Remember, 99% of the time, in real experiments, you don’t get the final yes or no answer you would like. 10 minutes:  Revisit your Hø. Do you want to change it? Rewrite it if so. If you change it, write down what are the reasons for your change of heart.  Think your Hø is fine the way it is? Rewrite it anyways! This time, write down what are the reasons for you sticking with your initial prediction.  Which class observations are helpful in making your conclusion? Which were not? How could the observations have been improved?  What is one thing that you learned from the egg activity so far?

Tuskegee Study 1932 - 1972 A clinical study, conducted around Tuskegee, Alabama, where 400 poor -- and mostly illiterate -- African American sharecroppers became part of a study on the treatment & symptoms of syphilis. This study led to major changes in how patients are protected in clinical studies. Individuals enrolled in the Tuskegee Syphilis Study were not informed of their diagnosis; instead they were told they had "bad blood" and could receive free treatment.

Last slide! As you leave today, turn in your egg notes. Tomorrow we’ll talk about the chemistry of Hurricane Katrina. This is going to be your first project. Remember your HW # 2 is due tomorrow.
