Visual Rhetoric 2015-2016 Analyzing Images as Text

When viewing an image, you can read it like you do a text. First, think about the rhetorical situation. Then, think about the rhetorical appeals. Finally, the patterns of development. Images are text too!

got milk? House of Dereon. Home bodies. Growing up I wanted to be just like my mom. So I drank milk. Some studies suggest that women who drink enough milk tend to weigh less and have less body fat than those who don’t. So drink 24 ounces of lowfat or fat free milk every 24 hours as part of your healthy diet and see for yourself. Who says father knows best? 24/24 milk your diet. Lose weight.

Speaker: MILK! Occasion: Women wanting to feel and look healthy (like Beyonce!) Audience: Women. Daughters. Mothers. Purpose: To make women think if they drink 24/24 they will look sexy like Beyonce and her hot mama. Tone: Sassy, sexy, motivating Subject: the benefits of milk Appeals: Logos “Studies show…” Ethos: Beyonce! And her mom! Milk! Pathos: Appealing to the mother daughter relationship; appealing to women’s insecurities. Patterns: Cause and effect, narration, exemplification

Yo You and a partner try! “Keeping up with 20,000 growing minds takes a lot of energy. So to help lead the Big Red, I choose a big glass of milk. Packed full of high- quality protein and 8 vitamins, it’s like liquid brainpower.” Cornell University President, David Skorton (Cornell is where the ‘Got milk?’ campaign first began)

your own! Milk make bones strong. Bones no break when Hulk drink milk.
