1 Principles of the Constitution 8.28 Describe the significance of the Magna Carta, the English Bill of Rights, and the Mayflower Compact in relation to the development of government in America. (C, H, P) 8.33 Describe the principles embedded in the Constitution, including the purposes of government listed in the Preamble, separation of powers, check and balances, the amendment process, federalism, and recognition of and protections of individual rights in the Bill of Rights. (P)

2 Principles of the Constitution 1.Popular Sovereignty the government gets its authority from the people 2.Limited Government the government has only the powers that the Constitution gives it. 3.Separation of Powers - powers divided into three branches - each with its own duties 4.Checks and Balance – each branch of government has the power to check, or limit, the actions of the other two.

3 Principles of the Constitution 5. Federalism – Division of power between the federal government and the states. 6. Republicanism – Republic form of government. Citizens elect representatives to carry out their will 7. Individual Rights – Constitution protects individual rights – freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the right to a trial by jury
