Popular Sovereignty Definition:
Governmental power that stays with the people. Example: The Declaration of Independence states that governments derive their powers from “the consent of the governed.” “Governed” are the people The people need to consent or “approve” what the government can do.

Republicanism Definition:
Favoring a government where the supreme power lies with the people. Favoring a republic, or represented democracy We pick representatives to make and carry out decisions we, the people, would like to see happen.

Federalism Definition:
Favoring a government where the supreme power is divided and shared between the state and federal government.

The Federal System The Federal System National Government

Limited Government Definition:
The Constitution limits the actions of government by specifically listing powers it does and does not have.

Limited Government Separation of Powers
Each of the three branches of government has its own responsibility Three Branches are: Executive Branch Legislative Branch Judicial Branch

Limited Government Checks and Balances:
Each branch of government holds some control over two branches. Example: Supreme Court can find a law unconstitutional.

Limited Government Individual Rights
Basic liberties and rights of all citizens are guaranteed in the Bill of Rights. Example: Freedom of Speech, Freedom of Press, Freedom of Religion, and the right to a trial by jury.
