2 Growth of Railroads Transcontinental Railroad built by Union Pacific and Central Pacific Government didn’t have enough money so Railroads were paid in land Towns that the railroad went through flourished. Towns where the railroads bypassed withered

3 Corruption plagued the railroads. Credit Mobilier Scandal and stock watering where railroads over inflated the value of their company. Sold their stock for huge profits Irish and Chinese immigrants worked on the railroad. Irish for the Union Pacific laying 10 miles of track per day. Chinese for the Central Pacific much slower speed through the mountains.

12 Growth of Labor Unions The National Labor Union, formed in 1866, attracted a total of 600,000 members, only lasted six years. However, it excluded Chinese and didn’t really try to get Blacks and women to join The Knights of Labor, was begun in 1869 and continued secretly until 1881. It only barred liquor dealers, professional gamblers, lawyers, bankers, and stockbrokers Haymarket Square Bombing forever associated the Knights of Labor with anarchists and lowered their popularity

13 Samuel Gompers establishes the American Federation of Labor Gompers demanded a fairer share for labor. He simply wanted “more,” and sought better wages, hours, and working conditions Labor Union members only represented 3% of population 1894 Government establishes Labor Day to honor Labor Union workers
