A Society in Turmoil

Industry and Labor U.S. Government Industry We need war materials!!!! Well, we don’t need to spend money on war materials anymore This process of switching from wartime production to peacetime production is known as demobilization. EFFECTS IN 1919 1.Increased unemployment 2.Large amount of labor strikes WHY?  Businesses took away many of the benefits that the government forced them to give workers during the war.

The Demands of African Americans Many African Americans felt the war would usher in a new age for race relations in the United States Racism increased Massive layoffs from returning troops Race riots broke out (1919) Marcus Garvey became a leader among African Americans Black Nationalism  A.A. should take pride in their own achievements Pan-Africanism  A.A. should return to Africa

The Red Scare Revolution Americans feared radicalism following the war, especially the spread of revolution from the Soviet Union following the Russian Revolution (Communist International) Bombs were mailed to many prominent businessmen in the U.S.  had a radical revolution begun??? Sacco & Vanzetti Despite worldwide protest and sketchy evidence, these two Italian immigrants were executed in the electric chair

Election of 1920 Warren G. Harding - Republican Vote for me and we’ll have a “Return to Normalcy”

Was Justice Served? Judge Webster Thayer who sentenced Sacco and Vanzetti to death ended the trial with this statement: “This man [Vanzetti], although he may not actually have committed the crime attributed to him, is nevertheless morally culpable, because he is an enemy of our existing institutions…The defendant's ideals are cognate with crime.” 1.Were Sacco and Vanzetti sentenced fairly? 2.Do you think Americans are too often times reactive instead of proactive? 3.Can you think of other times in American history where hysteria gripped the country and made citizens act a certain way?
