Grace Fellowship Church Pastor/Teacher - Jim Rickard www.GraceDoctrine.org Thursday, January 16, 2014

Prov 28:13, “He who conceals his transgressions will not prosper, but he who confesses and forsakes them will find compassion.”

Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.— Amen.

Prov 3:5, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.”

Proverbs Chapter 12 Contrasts between the righteous and wicked in thoughts, speech and actions.

Section 2, vs. 15-28 Contrasting the Use of the Tongue, Controlling Anger!

Vs. 22 gives us the theological foundation for this section.

Prov 12:15

Prov 12:15 “Wise” and “Fool” are defined by their acceptance or rejection of authoritative counsel, i.e., Bible Doctrine either from the book or mature believers.

The Negative!

The Negative! This believer thinks they have it all down, and everything they do is right. They are without blame or fault, and they self justify.

2 Cor 10:12, “For we are not bold to class or compare ourselves with some of those who commend themselves; but when they measure themselves by themselves and compare themselves with themselves, they are without understanding.”

Prov 16:2, “All the ways of a man are clean in his own sight, but the LORD weighs the motives.”

Prov 16:25, “There is a way which seems right to a man, but its end is the way of death.”

Prov 21:2, “Every man’s way is right in his own eyes, but the LORD weighs the hearts.”

This type of arrogant believer is in fact seen by God as doing evil, cf. Judges 2:11; 3:7; 4:11; 17:6; 21:5.

The Contrast!

The Contrast! The wise man listens to Bible Doctrine and applies it.

The Contrast! The wise man listens to Bible Doctrine and applies it. Yet, the fool operates solely by his sin nature, feelings and emotions; thinking he is correct in all that he does.

Prov 19:20, “Listen to counsel and accept discipline, that you may be wise the rest of your days.”

Prov 12:16

Prov 12:16 Lack of Doctrine in the soul results in emotions controlling the soul.

“Anger” – KAAS, כַּעַס “anger, provocation, vexation, or grief.” The emotions of a man get the better of him. He has, “a short fuse”, getting angry very easily and quickly.

“Known at once”, YADAH BE YOM = Public disclosure. He is consistently known for his quick temper.

Prov 29:11, “A fool always loses his temper, but a wise man holds it back.”

He is a danger to himself in that this emotion kills the fool in Job 5:2, and must be restrained. He is also a dangerous companion, Prov 22:24f

Job 5:2, “For anger slays the foolish man, and jealousy kills the simple.”

“He who harbors hatred and bitterness injures himself far more than the one towards whom he manifests these evil propensities.” David O. McKay

“Anger itself does more harm than the condition which aroused anger.” David O. McKay

“For every sixty seconds of anger, you lose one minute of happiness.” Ralph Waldo Emerson

The Contrast!

The Contrast! The prudent man will not gossip, malign, slander, lie or take revenge, even when wronged.

He is “slow to anger”, keeps calm, cool and collected, is not motivated by his sin nature and therefore holds back his tongue.

“Nothing gives one person so much advantage over another as to remain always cool and unruffled under all circumstances.” Thomas Jefferson

Prov 17:27, “He who restrains his words has knowledge, and he who has a cool spirit is a man of understanding.”

Prov 19:11, “A man’s discretion makes him slow to anger, and it is his glory to overlook a transgression.”

“He who angers you, conquers you.” Elizabeth Kenny
