Blessings vs. Divine discipline related to applying wisdom in business. Pt. 1

Prov 11:15

Prov 11:15 Looks back to the warning of becoming surety in Prov 6:1-5

Solomon warns against the destructive folly of co-signing loans. Cf. Prov 6:1-5; 17:18; 20:16.

Prov 17:18, “A man lacking in sense pledges and becomes guarantor in the presence of his neighbor.”

It is not wrong to co-sign a loan for your family, royal family or friends, but it is wrong to co-sign for those you do not know well or you feel sorry for, etc.

“Suffer for it” means some disaster may happen to you where you can not provide for yourself or family.

The Contrast!

The Contrast! The man of wisdom knows a bad business decision when he sees it and will not co-sign or have anything to do with it.

The Contrast! The man of wisdom knows a bad business decision when he sees it and will not co-sign or have anything to do with it. As a result he will be blessed!

The blessing: “Security”- BATACH, בָּטַח, “To trust or place confidence in, to feel safe”, that is a complete, peaceful security.

Prov 11:16

Prov 11:16 “A gracious woman” is one with inner beauty, from the Bible Doctrine in her soul, that finds favor in the sight of another person

“Honor” KABOD, she will have a good reputation.

The Contrast!

The Contrast! One woman, who typically has less physical power, will outshine many men who operate wickedly

“Ruthless men”- ARIYTS, עָרִיץ, “Powerful, violent, terrifying, ruthless, or mighty.” Attain worldly “Riches”, OSHER, עשֶׁר, “riches or wealth.”

We are not to get down trodden when we see the wicked prosper knowing that it is only temporary, instead keeping our focus on the things above and not on the things of this world, Col 3:1-2.

Prov 11:17

Prov 11:17 This parallels the “gracious woman” of vs. 16, where this man also operates in business with honesty and integrity.

Your behavior affects others, Prov 10:11, as well as yourself.

The Contrast!

The Contrast! “Cruel man” – AKHZARI, אַכְזָרִי “Disposed to inflict pain or suffering, or the causing of pain and suffering.”

“Does himself harm” - SHE’ER, שְׁאֵר, AKHAR, עָכַר, Brings disaster to his own body = S.U.D.

Prov 15:6, “Great wealth is in the house of the righteous, but trouble is in the income of the wicked.”

“Pharaoh threw the boy babies into the river, (Exod. 1:20), but God drowned his entire army in the Red Sea (Exod. 14:28).” (Waltke, New International Commentary)

Prov 11:18

Prov 11:18 The wicked person’s gain via sins of the tongue is not a blessing or reward from the Lord. They are ill-gotten gains.

The Contrast!

The Contrast! Sowing righteousness is the person operating in honesty and integrity in all their business transactions.

Principles of Sowing:

Principles of Sowing: 1. Sowing entails timely effort and investment with the hope of a reward.

2. One reaps what one sows, sometimes a hundred fold more than you sowed, cf. Mat 19:29.

3. The picture of broadcasting seed invokes the notion of performing many kind acts everywhere.

4. The “sower” depends on God, who mysteriously provides the increase.

5. The temporal distance between the sowing and reaping suggests that the righteous waits for his reward, James 5:7.
