Grace Fellowship Church Pastor/Teacher - Jim Rickard www.GraceDoctrine.org Thursday, February 27, 2014

1 John 1:9-10, “If we confess our sins, He is faithful and righteous to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. 10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar and His word is not in us.”

Doxology Praise God, from whom all blessings flow; Praise Him, all creatures here below; Praise Him above, ye heavenly host; Praise Father, Son, and Holy Ghost.— Amen.

Prov 3:5, “Trust in the LORD with all your heart and do not lean on your own understanding.”

Proverbs Chapter 13 Vs. 10-11, Contrasting verbal and overt actions regarding the obtainment of wealth.

Prov 13:10

Prov 13:10 The Negative! Self-Righteous Arrogance result in contentions!

Presumption - ZADON, זָדוֹן, “presumptuousness, or pride.” People whose pride causes them to oppose God and exalt themselves.

It “denotes the psychological state of an exaggerated opinion of one's importance within society and a refusal to accept one's place within its structure under God.” (Waltke)

From it “comes nothing but strife, contention or debate.”

From it “comes nothing but strife, contention or debate.” Prov 17:19, “He who loves transgression loves strife; He who raises his door seeks destruction.” Cf. 2 Tim 2:14f.

The Contrasting Exhortation!

The Contrasting Exhortation! “Those who receive counsel.” Cf. Prov 11:14; 12:20.

“It refers to those with the modesty to acknowledge the limitations of their knowledge and the humility to allow themselves to be corrected, criticized, and led to a better plan of action.” (Waltke)

The blessing they receive is “wisdom”, CHOKMAH, חָכְמָה. The knowledge of reality and of right order, and acting accordingly.

Wisdom is characterized by peace, and strife is not wisdom. The man of wisdom will not bring strife and contention to the conversation, but will bring peace. Cf. Prov 12:20.

Are you wiser today than you were last year or ten years ago?

Prov 13:11

Prov 13:11 By fraud” MIN HEBEL ‏הֶבֶל, “breath or vapor = vanity.” Used for that which lacks permanence. In Jer 2:5; 2 Kings 17:15 for the worship of idols.

Eccl 1:2, “Vanity of vanities,” says the Preacher, “Vanity of vanities! All is vanity”

Gaining without working for it or quickly, (by gambling, lottery, theft, etc). It includes tyranny, injustice, extortion, lies, and windfalls at the expense of others. Cf. Prov 11:18.

“Dwindles” MA’AT, מָעַט, “To become few or to decrease.” Small in size, Prov 10:20; 13:11, and/or short in duration, Prov 5:14; 6:10.

Associated with Divine judgment of Israel in the decrease of wealth, Lev 26:22; Psa 107:38, children, Lev 26:22, and numbers, Psa 107:39.

If it is not gained by Divine good production it is not the fruit of the Spirit, and therefore has no lasting value, especially in the eternal state.

Prov 21:6, “The acquisition of treasures by a lying tongue is a fleeting vapor, the pursuit of death.”

The Contrasting Exhortation!

The diligent hand implies industry and patience, consistent and persistent effort for Divine Good Production, producing good of intrinsic value that has a lasting reward.

Diligence requires patience that comes from understanding that long-term benefits outweigh short term gains, Prov 12:11; 20:21; 28:22.

Prov 20:21, “An inheritance gained hurriedly at the beginning will not be blessed in the end.”

Prov 28:22, “A man with an evil eye hastens after wealth and does not know that want will come upon him.”

The substantial methods of patience, diligence, prudence, generosity, and faith are virtues that have stood the test of time and are virtues that we should be applying in our jobs today too, Eph 6:5-8; Col 3:22-25.
