There was a national consensus on race 1890s many Americans believed blacks were inferior to whites and could be treated as second-class citizens. For example: Advertisements, books, movies and other media stereotyped blacks. Thomas Dixon’s The Clansman glorified KKK and was later made into D.W. Griffith’s movie The Birth of a Nation.

Historian William Dunning wrote that blacks did not have the capacity or ability to vote. Harvard professor Charles Adams claimed “scientific facts” supported the inferiority of blacks. 7 Settling the Race Issue Response of the Black Community: Race riots erupted in Indiana, Illinois and Georgia with little success. Boycotts of streetcar systems took place between 1896-1908 to desegregate them failed. A.M.E. Bishop Henry Turner encouraged many to migrate to Liberia. Many developed their own separate black communities in the urban South creating businesses, churches and newspapers. Black leaders became active: Ida B. Wells ran a Memphis newspaper

Washington Worked his way through Hampton Institute. 1881 founded Tuskegee Institute in Alabama for vocational training for blacks. “Atlanta Compromise”- urged blacks to accept their position until they could improve their economic position.

9 Settling the Race Issue Response of the Black Community: Black leaders became active Ida B. Wells Booker T. Washington W.E.B. DuBois First black man to earn a doctorate at Harvard University and taught at Atlanta University. In 1910 he co-founded the N.A.A.C.P. with the goal of restoring civil rights to blacks. Wrote “The Soul’s of Black Folk” where he agreed with Washington that white help was needed, however, civil rights were necessary now not later. W.E.B. DuBois
