4. Staying Safe On-line
Staying safe in the virtual world is a lot like staying safe in the real world.
Don’t talk to strangers.
Ask permission to go somewhere new.
Talk to a trusted adult whenever you feel uncomfortable.
Treat others as you would like to be treated.
Answer the following questions to see if you are ready to handle the internet. With each correct answer, you will find a link to one of Miranda’s favorite websites.

5. Scenario One
You are searching for information for a report for Health class. You open the wrong link and see some pictures that make you feel uncomfortable. You:
Close the page, shut down the computer, and hope no one ever finds out that you saw it.
Close the page and tell a trusted adult.
Copy the link and send it to your five best friends. It makes you laugh just to think about their reactions.

6. Scenario Two
You are in a chat room chatting with your friends, and a screen name you don’t know pops into the conversation. She says she thinks the assembly was lame too, and then asks who your homeroom teacher is. You:
Ask her to tell her homeroom teacher first. If she names a teacher at your school, you know she is for real.
Text “OMG you go to Campbell Elementary too? I am Natalie Smith. Who are you?”
Tell her you have to go and sign out. She might be someone from your school, but she might also be an adult pretending to be a kid. It’s better to be safe!

7. Scenario Three
You are excited to try a new game your friends keep talking about, but when you try to play, a screen pops up telling you to update your browser. You don’t know what that means, but you really want to play the game. You:
Click “okay.” Nothing will stand between you and keeping up with the latest game.
Ask a trusted adult. You know its not a good idea to download something without an adult’s permission.
Call a friend and ask if she got that pop-up too. If she did, it must be okay.

8. Scenario Four
You have found a new website that you want to explore, when you fill in your profile, you give them:
Your full name, address, hobbies, and a cute photo.
Your first name, hometown and a photo of your cat.
A made-up screen name and a list of some of your favorite things.

9. Reward yourself with a visit to one of Miranda’s favorite sites:

13. You are not really that mean to your friends are you?
If it made you feel bad, it will make them feel bad too. Spreading inappropriate content is a form of cyber-bullying.

14. Never download anything without a trusted adult’s permission.
It may contain something you do not want to see, or a virus that could harm your computer. It is worth the wait to have an adult check it out first.

15. Only chat with people you know off-line, no matter what they say to make you think you know them.
Being in a chat room is like going trick-or-treating. You can only identify your friends when you know their costumes. The screen name is like a costume. Unless you recognize your friend’s screen name, you do not know who you are really chatting with. It could be another kid, but it could also be an adult who means harm.

17. Never give out personal information on-line.
No one needs to know your real name, your parents’ names, your address, your phone number, your school or your town. It is okay to share likes and dislikes, but you are safer if you do not share personal information.
