1 Internet Safety in Schools
Grades 3,4 &5 Created by: Kim Smith

2 The Internet is a valuable tool.
Like many tools, the internet can be misused. It can even be dangerous in certain situations. Students MUST learn how to use the internet safely.

3 Personal safety on the internet.
People are not always who they say they are when talking with them in the internet. You should NEVER give out any personal information about yourself or anyone else. There are people on the internet called predators that look for children to talk to and will be dishonest and may try to find out where they live or try to get you to meet them somewhere. This is why you NEVER give out any personal information to anyone. There is also cyberbullying. This is a type of bullying on the internet. Someone may be threatening you if you don’t do things. This is called cyberbullying. If this happens show an ADULT immediately!!

4 Information on the internet.
You should always discuss suitable sites to go on with your parents or an adult in charge at home. Not all websites are honest and they will try to sell you things that are not real. NEVER buy anything off the internet without an adult present.

5 Activities on the internet
Students should always discuss with their families what are acceptable SOCIAL NETWORKING and types of social communication on the internet. Students need to know the potential dangers of ing, downloading files and gaming. Viruses and other dangerous problems can occur while on-line. You can get viruses that will cause your computer to crash or stop working. You can also give websites your address when visiting certain sites, they will then send you material that can cause many problems on your computer. NEVER DOWNLOAD any information without an adult present to say its safe!

6 Students need to know that not all Internet information is valid (truthful) or appropriate.
Some sites we visit on the internet can promote violence. They can also promote negative attitudes, such as hate or intolerance, and dangerous or illegal activities.

7 Web Searching Students should ALWAYS check with an adult BEFORE surfing the web. You need to learn how to recognize a potential BAD site.

8 What to do if you encounter a person or site that is offensive or threatening to you.
STOP and call for an adult to come and look at what you are doing. If you are alone, leave the computer so you can show it to an adult later. Bottom line is you TELL AN ADULT AS SOON AS POSSIBLE!!!!

9 Chat Rooms People who send messages to you or chat with you are not always what they seem. They may be adults pretending to be “kids” to get information. NEVER, NEVER give out ANY information to anyone over the internet especially in chat rooms.

10 Personal Information Personal information is anything that could let someone know where you live, go to school or even play. Personal information is also your phone number. People can find out were you live by using your phone number. Never give anyone else’s personal information out either!!!!

11 Posting pictures on the internet
There are internet sites were you can post pictures of yourself and give out information about who you are. These sites are VERY popular among kids however, they can be VERY dangerous because you may not know who you are talking to and many people post false information to get you to “CHAT” with them.

12 The internet can be exciting and useful!
Make sure you are using it properly. Remember how easy it is to get and give information on-line so beware of anything that makes you uncomfortable. Always ask an adult if you are not sure!!
