8 Program of the 1st week Today : Start of this new academic year From Tuesday to Friday : Incoming PhD students meeting (Tuesday, 9:30 am, K203) 1st year registration by appointment only with Isabelle Leclercq (E203, tel 7624) 2nd and following years registration (please drop your fully completed forms at the PhD school, into the dedicated basket, next to E205) Every registration of a new PhD student requires an appointment (tel 7624) with the PhD school (E203)

9 To register Fully completed registration forms with all the required documents Signed thesis charter form (for new PhD students) Signed Information System charter (for new PhD students) Signed course plan (fiche pédagogique) (for all) For new PhD students, an appointment with the PhD School is mandatory : uncomplete forms will be rejected and a new appointment will be required. For other PhD students, The PhD school is open… EVERY AFTERNOON, but you can also drop your FULLY COMPLETED registration file into the basket (E205)

Proof of registration (Certificat de scolarité): on specific summoning from the PhD school (sur convocation spécifique de l’ED), from October 6, E205 Student Card: for new PhD students only, about one week after your registration, on specific summoning from the PhD school (sur convocation spécifique de l’ED) Resident Card (titre de séjour): UTT is in charge of resident cards. Please do not go by yourself to the prefecture ! Please contact the PhD school (Pascale Denis, tel 7614) at least 2 months before the deadline of your resident card

16 Without this prior agreement, no credits will be awarded
Training ST-type courses : Science and Technology 8 ECTS credits (2x20h) are required prior to your PhD defence Lectures proposed by the specialties – 4 ECTS credits / lecture. Lectures proposed by other institutions, summer schools… can be validated as ST credits by the responsible of your speciality A prior agreement from the responsible of your specialty is required !!! Without this prior agreement, no credits will be awarded

17 Training SHIP-type lectures: Human Sciences and Professional Skills
12 SHIP credits (60 h) are required prior to the PhD defence The lecture « MRIS : Méthodologies de Recherche (et de transmission) d’Informations Scientifiques et techniques» is mandatory (2 SHIP credits): 11, 12 December (UTT Library)

18 Without this prior agreement, no credits will be awarded
Training SHIP-type lectures: Human Sciences and Professional Skills See the list in the « Guide du Jeune Chercheur » (in French) Oral presentation at an international conference (2 SHIP credits) Lectures proposed in other curricula at UTT (engineering, master) Lectures proposed by other institutions… BUT For the each of these 3 possibilities, a prior agreement from the responsible of the PhD school is required !!! Without this prior agreement, no credits will be awarded

Level evaluation (in February) Registration to ED04 (Scientific Communication in English) if your level is adequate (4 SHIP credits) Inclusion into the English courses of UTT (2 SHIP credits if you validate LExx AND if you get the BULATS level 1) French as a foreign language : long lasting training or intensive lessons (Contact : PhD school)

26 The CPE certificate: « Engineering For Companies »
A specific program to develop skills to work in companies Proposed by the association of directors of the French engineering schools (CDEFI) To strengthen relations between doctors and companies To assess your « know how » to work in private companies Requirements Specific registration to the PhD school (application form + interview) A research work « in connection with » industrial companies 16 SHIP credits (instead of 12) required in company-oriented lectures (ED06 : « Doctoriales  » is mandatory) or in English PhD school lectures A short written report on the acquired knowledge An oral presentation of your company-oriented skills Certificate awarded by a specific jury with a « certificate » delivered during the PhD defence by the president of the PhD examination jury.

Mandatory to validate the certificate « CPE » Exclusively in French A specific information meeting will be organized

Initial choices will affect your future No teaching activities => no job in universities No publications => neither a job in a university nor in a research organization No knowledge of companies => no job in any company (see the CPE certificate)

42 The thesis A personal contribution to research into a team
The thesis is your thesis The thesis is a first professional experience based on research and innovation The function of your supervisor(s) is to help you to reach the goal that has been jointly defined The thesis is a project and must be managed as any project The thesis ensures personal skills development (technological and scientific skills… but not only…)

43 Language training Improving your English is of your initiative,
The result of your research is not only the « know how », it is important to be able to communicate with others… in English (and in French) Improving your English is of your initiative, Level evaluation (in February), then you can attend English lessons with other UTT students Contact : PhD school If you want to improve your communication skills in scientific English: ED04 (4 credits)… after level evaluation

44 Improving your French (Dominique MASSON)
The thesis can be written in English… (international co-supervision, non French-speaking members of the jury…) but a extended abstract (20-30 pages) has to be written in French You can (must) improve your French by attending « French as a foreign language (FLE) » lessons with UTT engineering and master students Some available possibilities (after level evaluation: October 2, October 9, both at 3:00pm): Short intensive lessons Long lasting French training Contact: PhD school
