7 Carpet & Fabric Types A basic knowledge of carpet fibre types and their characteristics is critical to effective and successful carpet cleaning. ?

8 Carpet & Fabric Types commonly encountered
Synthetic Fibres – Synthetics are fibres mainly derived from petrochemicals. These include Acrylics, Polyester, Polypropylene and Nylon. Acrylic and Polyester fibres are seldom used on their own but are blended with Nylons and Polypropylene. Synthetics are relatively resistant to chemical damage and have low absorbency. Natural Fibres – Natural fibres are fibres derived from plants and animals. These include Wool, Cotton, Jute and Silk. Natural fibres are susceptible to damage by incorrect cleaning chemicals and procedures. They have high absorbency.

9 Carpet & Fabric Types Synthetic Fibres
Polypropylene (Olefin) Characteristics – a strong, solution dyed fibre which is virtually non- absorbent. It is easily damaged by friction and tends to attract oily soils. Can become distorted from traffic and develop wear marks. Stain Resistance – very stain resistant because it is solution dyed. Is not damaged or discoloured even by chlorine bleach. Identification – a burn test will develop a asphalt odour and leave a dark, hard bead residue as ash. Requires chemistry which will reverse the static charge to facilitate easy soil release. Requires tough grease cutting chemistry. High pH chemistry permitted.

10 Carpet & Fabric Types Synthetic Fibres
Nylon Characteristics – a very resilient fibre which releases soils easily. Some nylons are solution dyed, however most are “acid dyed”. Nylon technology has advanced over the years, resulting in 5th and 6th generation nylon fibres which are more stain resistant however the stain resistance is damaged by high pH chemistry (pH over 10) and cationic solutions. Stain Resistance – Nylon stains easily due to it’s acceptance of “acid dyes”. 5th and 6th generation nylon carpets display significantly higher stain resistance. Identification – a burn test will develop a sealing wax odour and leave a dark, hard bead residue as ash. Requires good overall cleaning chemistry for efficient soil release and stain removal. pH of cleaning solutions must be less than 10. Protection with a fluorochemical including acid dye blocks is recommended.

11 Carpet & Fabric Types Natural Fibres
Wool Characteristics – a very resilient fibre which releases soils easily. Wool accepts dyes very well, hence it’s popular use for colourful area rugs. It is a highly absorbent fibre and dries very slowly. Over wetting and/or long term exposure to cleaning solutions over pH 9,5 will damage wool causing cellulosic browning. Stain Resistance – Wool stains easily due to it’s high absorbency. Identification – a burn test will develop a burning hair odour and leave a dark, crumbly ash which leaves a black mark on your fingers when crushed. Requires good overall cleaning chemistry for efficient soil release and stain removal. pH of cleaning solutions must be less than 8. If cleaning solutions over 8 are used they must be less than pH 10 and the carpet must be neutralised with an acid rinse. Protection with a fluorochemical including acid dye blocks is recommended. The cleaning process must facilitate maximum moisture removal and rapid drying.

12 Carpet & Fabric Types Natural Fibres
Cotton Characteristics – Cotton has poor resiliency and poor dimensional stability. Cotton accepts dyes readily and is very soft, hence it’s popular use for colourful decorator rugs. It is a highly absorbent fibre and dries very slowly. Over wetting and/or exposure to alkaline cleaning solutions will damage cotton causing cellulosic browning. Cotton is mainly found in area rugs and up-market upholstery. Stain Resistance – Cotton stains easily due to it’s high absorbency. Identification – a burn test will develop a burning paper odour and leave a dark, crumbly ash which leaves a black mark on your fingers when crushed. Requires good overall cleaning chemistry for efficient soil release and stain removal. pH of cleaning solutions must be less than 7,9. Ideally a mildly acidic cleaner is the best option for cotton. The cleaning process must facilitate maximum moisture removal and rapid drying. Delicate cottons should be cleaned with a low moisture, low pH method.

Standard equipment required Portable or truckmounted carpet cleaning extraction unit with hose and carpet wand. 8 Litre Pump-up sprayer. Rotary scrubbing machine (optional) Carpet rake and spotting brushes. Measuring jugs and container.

19 Carpet Cleaning Methods & Procedures
One step method Light to moderately soiled carpets. Faster cleaning times. Procedure Vacuum – Thoroughly vacuum the carpet to remove dry soiling. (Dry soiling makes up 80% of the soil in the carpet) Prespray – No prespray applied. Extraction Clean Preparation – Add 30ml Emulsifier Plus per 10Lt hot water, into Portable Extraction Unit solution tank OR mix 250g Extracta Pro per 10Lt hot water for Truck Mount concentrate. Meter at 4 gallons per hour. Extraction Clean – Clean and extract using slightly overlapping strokes. Apply solution on the push stroke and vacuum only on the return pull stroke. Note: Do an extra vacuum stroke for dense and high pile carpets. Ventilate the area to facilitate fast drying times. Restrict foot traffic until totally dry.

20 Carpet Cleaning Methods & Procedures
Two step method Moderate to Heavily soiled carpets. Procedure Vacuum – Thoroughly vacuum the carpet to remove dry soiling. (Dry soiling makes up 80% of the soil in the carpet) Prespray – Using a pump-up sprayer, apply prespray solution (note dilution ratios) to an area which can be extracted within 20 minutes. Extraction Clean Preparation – Add 15ml Emulsifier Plus per 10Lt hot water, (or 30ml Rinse Pro per 10Lt) into Extraction Unit solution tank OR mix 250g Extracta Pro per 10Lt hot water for Truck Mount concentrate. Meter at 2 gallons per hour. Extraction Clean – Clean and extract using slightly overlapping strokes. Apply solution & vacuum on the pull stroke and do a 2nd vacuum only pull stroke. Note: Do an extra vacuum stroke for dense and high pile carpets. Ventilate the area to facilitate fast drying times. Restrict foot traffic until totally dry.

21 Carpet Cleaning Methods & Procedures
Low moisture method (encapsulation method) Using AP460 Encap Plus (dilute 1:20 to 1:32) Procedure Vacuum – Thoroughly vacuum the carpet to remove dry soiling. (Dry soiling makes up 80% of the soil in the carpet) Prespray – Using a pump-up sprayer, apply Encap Plus solution (dilute 1:32) to an area not larger than 25m2. Or – Pour Encap Plus solution into the solution tank of a rotary scrubbing machine fitted with a carpet brush. Scrub Clean – Scrub the area, using overlapping paths and repeat each twice. No extraction or further cleaning required. Drying – Allow area to dry (normally 1hour) before returning to use. Note: Subsequent dry vacuuming will remove dry, encapsulated soil. Ventilate the area to facilitate fast drying times. Restrict foot traffic until totally dry.

Spot and stain removal Blood, Faeces, Vomit and Body Fluids (not urine) Procedure Preparation – Remove as much of the spill or stain by sponging or scraping up. First step – Using a spray bottle, apply Conquer to the affected area. Agitate and allow 10 minutes dwell time. Blot (or extract) to remove the stain. If the stain does not respond to the Conquer treatment. Second step – Using a spray bottle, apply Protein & Stain Spotter to the affected area. Agitate and allow 10 minutes dwell time. Blot (or extract) to remove the stain. The area may possibly require decontamination to remove germs and odours. Decontaminate – Using a spray bottle, apply a 1:10 solution of Deosan to the affected area. Lightly agitate and allow 10 minutes dwell time. Blot or extract away excess Deosan solution. Spot and stain removal Urine Spills Procedure Preparation – Remove as much of the spill or stain by sponging or blotting. First step – Using a spray bottle, apply Pet & Flood (dilute 1:4) to the affected area. Agitate and allow 10 minutes dwell time. Blot (or extract) to remove the stain. Some severe stains may require a repeat treatment. Severe Stains – Using a spray bottle, generously apply Pet & Flood (dilute 1:4)to the affected area. Allow 10 minutes dwell time Place a clean, white terry towel folded several times, over the affected area and weigh down with some heavy books and allow 60 minutes dwell time to draw the stain out. The Pet & Flood will destroy the bacteria from the urine. However if odours persist the area may possibly require decontamination. Decontaminate – Using a spray bottle, apply a 1:10 solution of Deosan to the affected area. Lightly agitate and allow 10 minutes dwell time. Blot or extract away excess Deosan solution. First step – Apply Citrisol to the spot. Agitate and allow 10 to 20 minutes dwell time. Agitate again and blot to remove the spot. Some stubborn spots may require repeat treatments. Second step – Using a spray bottle, apply Conquer to the treated area. Agitate and blot (or extract) to remove the remaining residues. Spot and stain removal Spots from cosmetics and medicines. Procedure Preparation – Remove as much of the spill or stain by sponging or scraping up. First step – Apply Conquer to the spot. Agitate and allow 10 minutes dwell time. Agitate again and blot to remove the spot. Some stubborn spots may require the use of Citrisol Second step – Apply Citrisol to the affected area. Agitate and allow 10 to 20 minutes dwell time. Agitate again and blot (or extract) to remove the remaining residues. Remove Residues – Finish off by lightly applying Conquer and blotting to remove excess Citrisol and staining agent. Drying – Allow area to dry (normally 1hour) before returning to use. 29 Spotting Chart Conquer - A high proportion of stains can be effectively removed with Actichem Conquer especially if treated early. If Conquer is unsuccessful then proceed to the product specified below. All staining agents should be extract rinsed from the carpet. If wet extraction is not available, blot well, apply Conquer and blot away the excess moisture. 30 Deodorisation, Odour Neutralisation and Sanitisation
Urine odours Procedure Preparation – Remove as much of the odour source by normal wet extraction process. Do extra vacuum strokes. First step – Liberally apply Pet n Flood (dilute 1:4) to the affected area. Agitate and allow at least10 minutes dwell time. Second step – Extract with clear water or Rinse Pro. For severe scenarios continue with step 4 & 5 Third step – Liberally apply Deosan(dilute 1:10) to the affected area. Agitate and allow at least10 minutes dwell time. Fourth step – Extract with clear water or Rinse Pro. Pet n Flood destroys the odour causing germs and also removes the odour source by neutralizing and releasing the uric crystals.

31 Deodorisation, Odour Neutralisation and Sanitisation
Odours caused by pets, faeces, vomit, organics and food stuffs. Procedure Preparation – Remove as much of the odour source by normal wet extraction process. Do extra vacuum strokes. If stain removal is required treat with Protein Spotter or Actichem Bust and rinse / extract. First step – Liberally apply Deosan (dilute 1:10) to the affected area. Agitate and allow at least10 minutes dwell time. Second step – Extract with clear water or Rinse Pro. For additional odour neutralisation…. Third step – Spray apply Deosan(dilute 1:100) to the affected area. Agitate and allow at least10 minutes dwell time. Fourth step – Vacuum away excess moisture. Do not rinse with water. Deosan contains powerful biocides which destroy the odour causing germs and thus removing the source of the odour. Specialty odour absorbers in Deosan neutralize the air-borne mal-odours.
