14 Don’t Waste the Waste !! KITCHEN / BIO WASTE MANAGEMENT
A household generates 200 to 300 bio waste every day (vegetable peels, waste food, etc) Single homes can use small compact bio digesters 0.5 Cu Mtrs. Apartment complexes can use larger compact digesters upto 6 Cu Mtrs capacity. Biogas generated from this waste can be used for hot water / power generation. Additional biomass can be cultivated on roof tops for providing feed to bio digester.

15 How much CO2 in Waste Food ??
Wasted food doesn't just entail all the embedded carbon released during production and transportation. It generates more emissions once it's discarded on the trash heap. "A significant percentage of the household food that is wasted ends up in landfill, where it produces CO2 and methane gas," explained Richard Swannell, director of waste prevention at the UK-based Waste & Resources Action Programme (WRAP). "Methane is 23 times more potent than CO2 as a greenhouse gas," he added. As such, WRAP calculates that every ton of food and drink wasted roughly equates to 3.8 tons of greenhouse gas emissions that could otherwise have been avoided.

18 Energy from Waste Bio Digesters need care. They are like human stomach. Stomach upsets can kill the good bacteria and stop gas production. Venus offers techniques to develop cultivation of good practice for home, commercial and industrial waste segregation methods. Different bio waste produces varying quantities of gas. However good bacteria can be regenerated to maximise gas production. Crushed mass may be used as mulch or composted.

19 CASE STUDY : BIOGAS STATUS IN KOLAR DISTRICT
40% rural domestic energy need and 20% total district need can be met. Only 5% tapped so far. Increase in Biogas generation can reduce tree felling. 60% people could not install due to financial constraints. Govt Subsidies & close support is essential to harness this energy Taking dung yield for cattle as 3 kg/animal/day, for buffalo 12 kg/animal/day at requirement of biogas as 0.34 m3/day per capita, 132 villages biogas can meet energy demand of 15% of population. In 130 villages biogas potential is sufficient to meet 15-30% of population's energy requirements.  In 30 villages Biogas can meet energy demand of more than 45% of village population.

28 NEW TECHNOLOGY IN BIO REMEDIATION OF SOILS & ODOR CONTROL
You can see the effect in hours…

29 BIO REMEDIATION OF SOIL IN SITU & IMMEDIATE ODOR CONTROL
Gets rid of stubborn and persistent odors by safely altering and accelerating natural degradation processes. Application by spraying at 20 Sq Mtrs per litre, every day for 4 consecutive days, microbes will work its way through the waste, help the indigenous microbes break down the waste and also neutralize odors at the same time. Easy to use, environmentally safe, non-hazardous, non-toxic, non-corrosive, non-flammable and non-pathogenic. It is highly competitive and withstands attacks from other organisms, which allows it to continue to work at it’s highest efficiency rate throughout the remediation. On site remediation of soil and contaminated media is most cost effective means of dealing with contamination. Once the process of conversion is complete, the organic waste is converted into a fertilizer, rich in nutrients and minerals. Microbes cease to work once all the organic waste are converted.

30 VENUS BIO REMEDIATION Municipal Waste Control is specifically designed to tackle the stubborn issues associated with municipal waste – namely offensive odours and decomposition of organic materials. And the bonus is, we get converted into a Class A fertilizer eliminating offensive odors. Sewage Remediator changes the way we treat sewage. The blend of microorganisms, enzymes and nutrients destroy all pathogens within hours of application by eliminating noxious odors within minutes. Other problematic elements like nano- materials are also digested and neutralized. The need for landfill disposal and incineration will be eliminated as the sewage will be converted into a class A suitable for agriculture applications. This product can be seamlessly integrated into any existing treatment facility bringing significant savings to cities and municipalities. Aqua Purifier. Many rivers lakes and ponds are polluted by excess sewage and / or industrial effluents. Farms, factories and various other human activities all directly or indirectly contribute to fresh water pollution. Our solutions attacks and converts all the inert organic matter in the water into humic matter, which falls at the bottom and encourages the growth of plants that will naturally filter the water. Rehabilitation to natural state provided the influx of unwanted effluents is curtailed.

51 PHILOSOPHY & POLICY

52 Some Recommendations Focus on efficiency in management of waste at source. Reorganizing a dedicated standing resources group for waste management . Group to monitor implementing agency (say, BBMP) or other stake holders down to residential levels waste management adherence to policy guidelines. Group to have suo moto penal powers for enforcing directives. Allocate funds for subsidizing capital cost directly to dealers with accelerated depreciation benefits. Special allocations for bio digestgers. Water resources- both Ground water as well as surface water needs to be declared as a common property resource and indiscriminate usage or wastage or contamination needs to be notified with penalty clauses. Direct all Government Offices to implement in canteens, etc. Costs to be budgeted against apportioned funds from amenities and related funds. Community participation in waste management is critical. Management at the point of initiation – homes, commercial and industrial wastes. NGOs involved in waste recycling . Provide structured employment to a community dependant on this profession. Education of the environment by through media, educational institutions, etc

53 Waste Segregation at Source

54 WASTE CATEGORIZATION 1. BIO DEGRADABLE : Food & kitchen waste like meat trimmings, vegetable peelings, cooked food, yard or green waste and paper. 2. RECYCLABLE : Generally non bio degradable waste like plastics, glass, metals, aluminum cans, etc. but also includes paper waste. 3. INERT WASTE : Not necessarily toxic but can be harmful to humans. Construction & demolition waste. 4. COMPOSITE WASTE : More than one material category, for example clothing, plastics toys, etc. 5. HOUSEHOLD HAZARDOUS WASTE : Medicines, paint, batteries, light bulbs, fertilizer & pesticide containers, e-waste like computers, printers, cell phones. These cannot be recycled or disposed off easily and special care is required.

55 WASTE SEGREGATION AT SOURCE
WASTE SEGREGATION AT SOURCE

56 WASTE SEGREGATION AT SOURCE
Meeting with all stake holders (Residents and local garbage clearance team). Briefing and distribution of hand outs on the procedure for waste segregation at source. Creation of facilities for dumping waste separately at local municipal garbage dumps. Using visual and print media to promulgate government directions for waste management – promote use of bio gas digesters & khambas. Issue instructions for use of Bio Digesters at all bulk cooking places like canteens, hostels, restaurants, etc Install bio digesters at all vegetable & meat markets. Encourage Zero Waste products. All options to be Sustainable.

57 ACCELERATED COMPOSTING AT SITE
Household Waste which would include organic and inorganic waste be dumped into a poly drum during the day. In the evening, the drum is sprayed with the Bio Remediation Mix and closed. Air vents may be left open. Next day, in the morning, the drum is removed by municipal staff and re-located in a yard and stocked for 60 days. Could have tumbler arrangements. When the compost is ready (or when odor is completely eliminated) the poly drum is emptied and recycled for next collection. The Compost is sieved for removal of inorganic elements for further disposal. Enhance traditional composting with Khambas.

58 Solid Waste Management at a Site in Tamil Nadu
BIOMIX FOR ACCELERATED MUNICIPAL WASTE MANAGEMENT

59 OVERVIEW OF PROJECT aarenghosh@eximgroupindia.net
Site is 500 Mtrs from the Highway and located adjacent to a back water channel. The unit engages about 40 green agents who collect sweep specified areas of the town in rotation, collect segregated garbage from homes and establishments and transport the waste to the facility about 3 Kms outside town. Waste in segregated at source into organic and inorganic groups. Clean inorganic waste like paper, plastic bottles, rubber, etc are stocked into a storehouse for further segregating into more homogenous commodities which can be sold directly to scrap buyers. Organic and mixed waste are dumped onto a cement platform for odor elimination through sun drying for 3 to 4 days. Thereafter, waste is sieved into Bio Compost Bins (24) in one shed and into Vermi Compost Bins (14) in another shed at the rate of 1.5 T per bin. A total storage capacity of about 54 tons exists. Bio Compost yields every 90 days while Vermi Compost yields every 60 days. About 3 to 4 tons of cooked food is received every day which is crushed and fed into a bio digester whose output is used for running a generator for providing power to the facility. Unit is self sufficient after sale of processed products and a subsidy from town authorities

69 PROBLEM AREAS

70 PROCESS ISSUES Total capacity for Composting (Bio & Vermi) is 54 Tons in one batch which is about 264 Tons / year (ie., 36 tons x 4 turnarounds = 144 tons Bio) and 20 tons x 6 turnarounds Vermi). Waste Generated by the Town is more than what can be processed and hence leads to creation of an unstructured waste dumping as seen below.

71 ENVIRONMENT & HEALTH ISSUES
Organic waste dumped on neighboring land releases bad stench. Habitation is coming up slowly as can be seen in the back ground. Sun Drying of waste in the facility also releases bad odour. Physical handling of waste after being dumped into the Sun Drying Platform, cultivating compost, particularly vermi compost exposes green volunteers to health risk.

72 OBJECTIVES We need to remove odour from two locations
OBJECTIVES We need to remove odour from two locations When fresh garbage is dumped on the sun drying platform, it releases odor. Please considering total capacity of 3 to 6 tons per batch. We need to neutralize odor from 990 Sq Mtrs of garbage dump in the neighboring plots. Suggested as trial site …
